I hope Im not being too personal, and if I am I apologize but DH and I, unfort. are not able to buy a house of our own right now and are currently looking for an apt. It just made me curious as to what the other LI Wedding Brides living accomodations are with their FH or DH? House? Apt? AptBuilding? COndo, etc.
***If you are in a complex would you mind telling me which one...thats is if you recommend them TIA

sorry - i didn't mean to imply anything!! i should have mentioned that the apartments in homes that we liked were waaaay over our budget - it was the illegal ones that we could afford!
No worries!! It's very important that people know whether the apartment is legit or not!!
We rent an apt (well, more like tiny a$$ studio) in Manhattan. Hopefully within the next few years we'll be able to buy a bigger place here.

DH and I rented until we got married and then started looking to buy a house. We are now homeowners. I don't know where you live, but if you are close to Miller Place, there is a really beautiful apartment complex in Holbrook right off of Nichols Rd. I have friends that live there and they love it. Let me know if you are interested in details.
ETA: They are pet friendly which I know for you is a plus.
That's probably where I live!!!
We moved in a year ago and they no longer allow dogs, though there are some people that have dogs anyway.

Re: Apt, house or apt building
We have lived in NYC for the past 4 years... hopeing that one day we will be able to afford a nice house. But NOT anytime soon- we are still loving the city and are not ready to go anywhere yet!! But we don't mind living in a apt building at all. I kind of like it actually- I have a doorman to say good morning to me every morning and goodnight when I come home HAHA But seriously though- I think living in an apt is not a bad option at all!!!

We live in a co-op, it is the best investment ever. I am paying the same monthly as I would to rent except that it is my place and I have so much equity in only 2 years. If you have the down payment you should buy before you rent

We both lived at home for a good while so we were able to afford a house.

Re: Apt, house or apt building
FH and I bought a condo a couple of months ago. It was more affordable than the houses in the area and easier to maintain. The mortgage is practically the same as if we were renting....so we thought it was our best option.

Re: Apt, house or apt building
We're renting the top half of someone's house. But we're househuntng. We looked at co-ops but they require 20% downpayment (any anything we liked would force us to have a bigger downpayment than we woud need for a house!). We looked at condos, but they cost almost as much as a small house. So now we're looking at houses.
Good luck!
ETA: This was my experience in Nassau. If you're in Suffolk, you might have better luck with apartments. Pulte is building beautiful condos in Central Islip (right by the Ducks stadium) if you want to buy. If you want to rent, Fairhaven has nice apts all over Suffolk.

Re: Apt, house or apt building
FH bought a house the month after he met me (timing was coincidental). He actually lived in the accessory apartment and rented the house for two years. Then me and FH kicked out the tenants and moved into the house together!

Re: Apt, house or apt building
We rent and own right now - just temporarily. DH and I just closed on a coop yesterday and our lease isn't up until the end of next month so we're staying here until after we get the new place painted, etc. We rented a 1-BR in Manhattan for two years (one year before the wedding and one year after) and saved up to buy our coop. We found a really great deal so we were able to stay in the neighborhood.

We are moving to Albany and will be living in an apartment complex. My FH is rotational for two years, so we will not be buying a house until we settle down.

Re: Apt, house or apt building
I have to say I'm very attached to my apartment too. I live in a co-op and it's got a doorman and security cameras everywhere, even one pointing right at my car. If I come home late I even call the doorman and tell him to keep an eye out for me in the garage. plus I like my terrace and I have a great view of the NYC skyline.
I don't think I'm gonna sell the apt, just rent it. It's hard fr me to let go. I've been here 10 yrs, have friends in the building and I'm 15 mins away from midtown and 2 1/2 blocks away from the subway.
FH has a house in Wantagh so that's where I'll move. I'm gonna miss waking up to the Empire State Building.

Re: Apt, house or apt building
Currently we own a COOP apt. in Park Slope brookyn. Although its a bit small to us, its convenient to work, 1 block to the park, and I have wonderful neighbors.
We like to own a house in a couple of years. I like having our own back yard...etc

We just bought a house, we wanted to live together first to make sure we can actually 'live with each other' if that makes sense

Re: Apt, house or apt building
We rent the top floor of a house. We love it! And after striking out with everything on Craig's List and the newspaper, we went with a broker (our Best Woman's mother) and it was the best thing we ever did. It was worth the extra money!
