Re: apt hunting question
We are looking to move in (out stuff, not actually us) on Oct 1, so we will start looking mid July/beg of August.....if its something we can't pass up, we might sign a month early.....we need to paint, get all our stuff together, furnish, etc anyway!

Re: apt hunting question
we started looking in January for May....most places said that was too early but i thought it was good....
we got to look, compare, and pick a favorite place by february, then we had time to get all the info we needed to go to our meeting to fill out the paperwork....
usually 2-3 months BEFORE your month is when they know what's going to be available for that month...
so for july/august, id start looking endmarch/begin april...try to be settled and filling paperwork for a place by may

I've been looking since December and just found something - supposed to move in beginning of April.

Its your call - wasn't as easy as I thought it was going to be. If you're ready to move in before that, I'd start looking sooner rather than later.

I know FH wants to move in asap but i'm delaying it as long as possible to save $. Regardless i'd probably be 'living' at home until the wedding or else my mom will flip out.

I think it all depends where you look - I found there was more in Suffolk County than where I was looking. And....a word of advice...if you're going to get a real estate broker, make sure they keep on top of it.

FH would LOVE to look into Suffolk but I can't as long as i'm working and going to school in the city 5 days a week.
We'll probably look in Franklin Square, Rockville Center ( RVC), Floral Park, New Hyde Park, Lynbrook.

Great question. FH and I need to start apartment hunting too, and based on all your suggestions, we better start crackin on it.

Re: apt hunting question
I have moved SO many times in the past 2 years. Here is what I have learned:
Landlords typically don't get more than 60 days notice on a place. So 2 months ahead is the earliest you can usually get in somewhere. FH and I are moving March 15th and we signed the lease just about 3 weeks ago (so 5 weeks out). To get a feel for an area and what is offered you can start 2-3 months ahead, but to actually look for a place you may want to sign a lease for I would really suggest 6 weeks or so is ideal, because you may find a place 3 months ahead of time but then a month or two later a ton more options are available.
HTH!

I think we'll start looking online in April and then look look in May. We both live at home and we really don't know what our $ can get us.

Re: apt hunting question
FH and I haven't 'officially' started looking but we did drive by 3 places that we thought we would've liked the first 2 were ruled out on the spot and the third we checked out on the website and the prices were ridic. But anyway, we're going to officially start looking in June!!.
