hello. i was wondering if you girls can help me here. my fh and i rent an apt in selden (its a basement apt in our landlords home). summer is here an we put in our energy efficient air conditioner and our landlord wants an extra $50 a month from us for it. we think that is excessive. we feel that an extra $15 a month should cover the added expense to her lipa bill. what do you think? we both work fulltime day jobs, so its only used in the evenings. she said she we could do $40 more bc we 'are harldy ever home'. i still think thats excessive. our neighbors across the hall (she has 2 separate apts in her basement) grudgingly pay the extra $50. let me know what you think a fair deal would be! ~lacey

The tag from my old one that I bought in 1999 said:' Based on standard U.S. government tests. Energyguide: More efficient air conditioners cost less to operate. This model's estimated yearly operating cost is: $48. Based on a 1995 U.S. Government national average cost of 8.67 cents per kWh for electricity. Your actual operating cost will vary depending on your local utility rates and your use of the product.'
This got me interested so I actually took a look at my electric bill to see what my rate is.
I pay 17.75 per kWh for ConEdison in NYC. So that yearly $48 number is pretty well off.
Its more like $100+ relisticaly.
And $50 buks a month is not that bad at all. The landlord doesn't care if you 'don't use it that much'. He is just covering his back just in case you do use it alot since he is not going to monitor your AC usage.

We don't even use that much more for our house. Our entire bill was $72 and we have used the ac everynight for over a month. And sometimes during the day.

I was told I'd have to pay that also if I had gotten an AC unit.
I was in one apt where the landlord actually provided the AC and didn't charge for it.

We lucked out with out apt. When we moved in last year our landlord only asked for $50 for the summer for the air conditioner. We're not home all day, so the only time we use it is at night, so I think it's reasonable.

We are also on budget, in a house, and I only pay $68/month. The most expensive month is in December with the xmas lights. I don't think the AC costs that much because the usage does not go up that much.
