Are Designer Dresses worth the $

Original post by Tivogliobene

I am not going to lie, up until now, I couldn't imagine myself with anything less than a Reem or a Lazaro....

But...as I tried on dresses last week, I might be changing my mind....for example, I tried on a GORGEOUS gown by 'Mary's' and I am just flat out confused.

This dress was under $1000 and its material was beautiful, its beading was sewn on, not glued like other cheaper dresses, and I honestly thought it was just as fantastic as a Reem....yeah hard to imagine, I know!

So I guess what I am wondering is, have any of you been in this dilemma? I am not sure if I am more concerned with saying 'My dress is by Mary's' (when my family is notorious for the $6k Reem's) or just regretting not buying a designer dress....petty and stupid....I know! But I would love that other $5K to go towards our home!

help:)

PS this is what I get for looking at dresses when my wedding is 16 months away!!!

i don't mean to be rude but if you have $5k and you're debating on whether to purchase a wedding dress with it or put it towards your home i think you really need to take a look at your priorities as a couple. i understand people want to splurge on certain aspects of their wedding, myself included, but i never let that stand in the way of priorities my fi and i had as a couple, ie: house.

I don't think it is worth the money but if you fell in love with a $5k then I would say go for it. Labels do not mean a thing to people that don't know wedding gowns. I still don't really know the difference nor do I care. I gave them how much I was willing to spend and tried on dresses from there. Some people care about the label. I could care less. FYI: If my FI found out that I ever paid that much money for a dress I think he would be very angry and wonder were my head was at!! Get the plasma JMHO!!

if you love a less expensive dress then go for it.... my dress was $700 and i know its the dress i want...... id rather put the extra money towards a house......... I did however splurge a little extra on photo & video though......Prioritize!

Actually, it depends. Often many of the designer dresses are made inthe same factories that the $500 dresses are made at.

$6K gowns are usually made by hand using delicate fabrics...while cheaper dresses are manufactered using polyester or other man made fabrics. The same machinery would not be used. Also, a couture dress will be made to your specifications and the designer will alter it as you want it (and you probably get to meet with the designer to discuss the changes, etc..)

But I think its fairly insulting to those who have spent a great deal on their gowns to say that they are just paying for the name. Everyone may not appreciate the differences but there is a difference!

I think this topic is being beated to death, but I agree with Sonicstef and what she wrote about was my exact experience.

I met with the designer of my gown and he took my measurements. He altered the design to be exactly what I wanted. The fabric of my gown was gorgeous and heavy, and I think, well worth the $ we paid.

And like others have said, if you find a good quality dress that you love for less, go for it.

a dress does not have to be expensive to be beautiful, the dress is only worn once so it doesnt have to be the really expensive ones that are a good quality, when less expensive ones are just as good a quality. Your paying for the name and it is a waste of $$ if you find something else you like better

I want to preface this with I don't normally post replies to statements that I find utterly unnecessary.

Sorry but I did find that rude. First of all, my post was regarding the difference between a high end dress and a less expensive one which I feel most people who posted replies definitely gave some great insight to...This was not a debate on how to spend money.

I simply said that if I could get away with buying a great dress that I love for $1,000 rather than $5k, that would be awesome since that would be more money to spend on our home (like a new dining room set for example). For your information, FI and I have enough money for a house and our entire wedding is already paid off minus a couple things here and there and we have 16 months to go. Did I mention that we paid for it entirely ourselves?

FI and I have our priorities straight and they have been that way for a very long time. In fact, FI would give me $5K MORE out of his own money to buy me a $10K dress if it meant that much to me. Why? Because our priorities are straight and we are in terrific shape thus far. I think your opinion is an assumption that should not have been stated given that you don't know anything about me, or our situation.
The post was about a dress, not priorities whatsoever. JMO which apparently we are all entitled to.

HI!

IMO I think you should go for the dress you get that feeling in...like this is it...this is my dress.
When I was shopping for mine, I was set on an Eve of Milady gown...I didn't want to hear of anything else, when I started trying on dresses, I hated how the Eve dresses fit me, but was still set on it! ( I know you're thinking she's nuts!), but I was determined to try on so many different styles of Eve dresses, and thats what I did, I learned that big poofy dresses were not complimenting me, yet when I tried on a A-Line silk Eve dress, it flattered me like no other, ....and I felll in love ,....starting shedding happy tears, and just knew in my gutt this is my dress....if you get that feeling with the Mary dress...then I say who cares who it's by... just make sure you get the feeling of THIS IS THE ONE! ....you still have time,...so if you're not getting that yet, perhaps you're dress is still out there waiting for you.....
Hope I didn't ramble too much, but I hope I offered some help too!
