Are Designer Dresses worth the $

Are Designer Dresses worth the $

I am not going to lie, up until now, I couldn't imagine myself with anything less than a Reem or a Lazaro....

But...as I tried on dresses last week, I might be changing my mind....for example, I tried on a GORGEOUS gown by 'Mary's' and I am just flat out confused.

This dress was under $1000 and its material was beautiful, its beading was sewn on, not glued like other cheaper dresses, and I honestly thought it was just as fantastic as a Reem....yeah hard to imagine, I know!

So I guess what I am wondering is, have any of you been in this dilemma? I am not sure if I am more concerned with saying 'My dress is by Mary's' (when my family is notorious for the $6k Reem's) or just regretting not buying a designer dress....petty and stupid....I know! But I would love that other $5K to go towards our home!

help:)

PS this is what I get for looking at dresses when my wedding is 16 months away!!!

Honestly, it's like you said, you love the dress, and it seemed to be high quality...Sometimes you are paying a higher price for higher quality, other times for a designer name. It really seems like the Mary's dress is what you want. As long as it looks great on you and has the high quality beadwork you want, I say, go for it! There's NO reason not to save that $6k for a new couch and big screen tv!

I agree. YES - designer dresses are worth the $$ if that is what you like and you are comfy with.

BUT I think it is more important to find something you LOVE then look at the price tag. As long as the dress doesn't look 'cheap' and poorly made - go for it.

I had a bride once tell me - Look at my dress, can you believe I only paid $500 for it - the truth was - yes I could believe it - it looked cheap - just stay clear of that!!!

If you love a less expensive dress, go for it!

The biggest difference between a high end dress and a more budget minded one is mostly fabric. Reem and Lazaro, etc.. use expensive silk and natural fibers. If you found a dress you love and are happy with the fabric, count yourself lucky and count your extra dough.

That is what I figured....and thinking about all the other money we are spending, I am not sure I can still justify spending $6K on a dresss I will be in for a mere 12 hours......

In looking for my dress, I tried on both expensive and less expensive dresses. The expensive dresses I tried on all had beautiful beading and were made of silk that was a nice quality and a nice weight.

I did try on less expensive dresses that were just as beautiful and also made of nice silk. It's just a matter of finding them. Less expensive dresses are not all necessarily of a poorer quality.

Five thousand dollars is a lot of money. If you think this is 'the dress' (rather than a GORGEOUS dress), you should get it.

Honestly, I spent 2100 on my dress and I think it's fantastic... I would never have spent 5,000 on my dress just b/c it's a 'XYZ' designer. I bought what I fell in love with, not what the tag said, well, they ripped it out, so i couldn't have known anyway, ha.

Designer dresses are not worth the $$$ if you are not in LOVE with the dress. If you are in love with a less expensive dress, consider yourself lucky!!! I searched hi and low for my gown and couldn't find anything I loved until I hit that higher price bracket -- unfortuantely for me and my wallet -- but had I found the dress of my dreams for $500, believe me that would not have stopped me. It's all about how you feel in the gown.

And, let me tell you something about Mary's gowns -- they are very beautifully made. The first dress I fell in love with was actually a Marys but my MOH and Mom talked me out of it but I thought the same things you did - I couldn't believe it was only $700 because the fabric and the fit were beautiful! I ended up with a St. Pucchi though.

I have a Reem and I am in love with it! But I bought it because of the fantastic quality and the beautiful design, not because of the name. If you found something that WOWs you and the quality is very good then consider yourself lucky and buy it!!!! Who cares about the name. Unless your guests have recently planned a wedding or are total fashionistas, they won't know who the hell Reem is anyway!

I think it is silly to buy a dress just because of a name behind it. But I am so not into labels at all - doesn't impress me at all!! You should buy the dress that you feel wonderful in and makes you feel gorgeous!!!!!! That is really all that matters.

I was the opposite when I was looking. I didn't want to spend a lot of money on a dress I was only going to wear once and all the dresses I originally liked were in the $1000 range and they all looked nice but none made me feel great. Well wound up I bought designer (not a very well known one but still more than I planned on spending) and don't regret it one bit. It was the dress (not the label) that made me feel wonderful. It was the one dress I tried on (and I tried on lots) that I truly felt 100% comfortable in and made me feel great.

FI and I just threw out 2 wedding gowns -- his ex-wife (cost a fortune) and my first one (more moderately priced). They both wound up on the side of the road anyway. PS I look much better in my wedding pics than she did.

I am soooo GLAD you said this! They really are beautifully made....I mean, I really had a hard time finding any difference between this dress and some of the more expensive ones I have tried on.....

I tried on dresses without specifiyigna price range. I did't know at the tiemthat the Bridal garden carried the less expensive line. I jsut wen tb/c they are in my mom's neighborhood.

So, my mom & I loved my dress & the embroidery on it.
Then they told us the price & it was %-soemthing, and ym mm was shocked.
It later found out it is satin & organza-I guess it would be more if it were silk organza, but since I wasn't holdign it up to a more expensive dress, it looked fine to me.

I tried on a Ramona Keveza dress that cost $4000 and hated it, although I loved it in the photo. I wound up buying the one I cost less than $700.

You have to buy what YOU love. -You have to feel comfortable and beautiful that day - regardless of the name on the label. -

I didn't even know my designer existed until the woman @ Bridal Reflections put me in the Yolanda Couture gown. - Then of course I fell madly in love and had to have it !! -

To be honest though, I know a lot of people say 'Oh you're paying for the name' - but I think that is untrue - the more $$$ gowns are different material, are made differently etc. - HOWEVER, you can find an amazing gown for less than $5,000 .........BUT if you LOVE the $5k gown, and it's your dream dress and YOU CAN AFFORD IT. - I say Go For It !!

I agree. I was very diappointed at what all of the dresses looked like in person. Even the big designer's dresses were not impressive. Of course everything looks much better on the model in the picture than on me!
I finally gave up and bought a dress on ebay. My mother is still cringing
My dress turned out to be a knock off of a Priscilla of Boston dress and I didn't even know it! (I just saw it in this months Martha Stewert weddings)

If you love the cheaper dress and it looks good on you...go for it!

To me, my dress was, because it is unique. If I would have found my dress and it was not designer, I still would have bought it. My answer is sometimes . . .

This is a bit of a pet peeve of mine too. The materials and time that go into a $5K dress are worth more than a dress 20% of the price.

As I said above, if you don't need silk and you love the dress - dont even think about passing it up.
