Are hotel blocks necessary?
I'm doing a hotel block simply bc my bday the next day and everyone plans on staying out late to party. We'll prob end up hanging out at the hotel bar otherwise I wouldn't have done it. As for what it is... The block is a group of rooms next to each other so everyone can be together and it's usually at a discounted rate. HTH

If you only have a few out of towners and its not a holiday weekend, you probably don't need the block. The discount they give was only a few dollars in my case. However, if your out of town guests are in the wedding party, you may want to have them all in one place.

I don't think a hotel block is necessary for your situation. Certain hotels will give you 10 rooms without you having to guarantee a certain amount get booked though. So if you wanted to just block a couple of rooms at a nearby hotel, you could just book a couple. Otherwise, you can just let your guests figure out their own hotel accomodations if they need to stay over

I'm not doing a hotel block. I don't have many oot guests and the ones I do have will be staying with family. FH and I will be leaving the next morning for our honeymoon so we aren't staying at a hotel that night. If any guests ask, I will let them know where the closest hotels are.

It's up to you. I don't think I'm doing a hotel block either. We have about 4 couples that are from out of town & I think if they need a hotel they can choose where they want to stay themselves. Plus if I do a block of rooms then I feel like I have to provide a shuttle for everyone & it just adds to the cost of the wedding..

I was not going to do a hotel block. I am already running a bus from where a majority of my guests are from to the RH BUT then my family had said they would want to stay in the hotel across the street from the RH so they do not have to worry about drinking and driving. SO now I am booking a block so my family and other guests outside of the Rockaways have an option too. Booking a block usually gets you a discount group rate adn your guests wont have to pay full price for their rooms.

I am doing a hotel block. In my case, my wedding is on a holiday weekend (Memorial Day) and we have OOT guests on both sides of the family. I knew the hotels would book up. The discount was pretty substantial - I think it was around $50-60 per night? I also wanted to shuttle the OOT guests so they could enjoy themselves and I needed a central location to shuttle everyone from.

We def have to do it. 75 percent of our guests are oot. We don't have a choice but it helps that our suite is free if a certain number of rooms are booked- it helps that or guests will be in one place because we are shuttling them as welll

I have to be honest, I've never been to a wedding that didn't have a hotel block with a shuttle. We pay so much money to provide alcohol for our guests, they should be able to drink it! And while guests are grown adults who can make their own decisions, even worse than not having them drink so they can drive, is the chance that someone will still drink and drive. For me personally, making sure neither of those scenarios occur is worth a few hundred dollars for a shuttle.
Re: Are hotel blocks necessary?
I don't think you need to. I am in a similar situation where all my guests live 20 to 30 minutes at most from the reception hall. The closest hotel is a good 10-15 minutes away anyways so we arent planning on blocking rooms.

I wanted to do a hotel block b/c FH has a bunch of OOT family... but was very disappointed with the price quote of the local hotels, neither of them had a shuttle, no offer of a complimentary room after a certain # and they said if any of the rooms were not booked we would have to pay the full amount! Has anyone run into this issue
