we're giving each set of parents a DVD and an album of our wedding
my parents paid for our photog and florist, but i dont think they want me to spend money to give it back to them?
maybe i'm being cheap or maybe i just don't understand the point? can someone explain to me why they are giving parent gifts?
i'd love to give them something great but we're paying for most of our wedding on our own and budget is tight since we bought the house
thoughts?

I think that getting them the album/dvd is fine!!! my parents don't want us 'wasting' our money on things... they are super picky and have what they need.
we got them: parents album Lenox silver frame massages.
Maybe something small?
People give parents gifts when their parents paid for the entire wedding as a way of saying thank you.

Re: are parent gifts necessary?
parent gifts are really necessary if they pay for the wedding (or a majority of it). we are giving my future in laws a wedding album and dvd as well bc they are paying for the florist and DJ. however, my parents are paying for pretty much all of our guests therefore we plan to give them something in addition to the album and dvd.

I don't think so. We are getting them parents albums and we MAY get my parents something additional since they have been amazing this whole engagement, and have helped us with some vendors. Although my parents have already specifically told us not to since they would rather we save our money or put it towards a fancy dinner out at the honeymoon.

I think it is mostly if they are paying for the wedding, but it sounds like they are paying a good chunk.
My mom isn't paying but I still got her gifts. For Mother's day I gave her the lenox mother's loving touch figurine and a MOB bag. For the day of I bought a handkerchief embroidered with a saying.
I think it would be nice to get them a small memento of the day. So like the handkerchief, or a frame.

Re: are parent gifts necessary?
We are giving my parents a nice gift because they are helping with a significant portion of the wedding cost. However, we are also giving FILs a gift, and they aren't contributing to the wedding at all, but we felt it was just a nice thing to do.
I personally do think it is necessary to gift them something. You give your bridal party gifts to thank them for being there for you throughout this entire process, so why wouldn't you thank your parents? You don't have to go nuts, but I think a little something can go a long way.

you only really 'need' to get your parents a gift if they are paying for the whole wedding. it is a way to show your appreciation- mine and my FH's parents are paying for the wedding, but my mother is insisting we do not buy them gifts because they know we don't have a lot of extra money.... we bought the dads humidors just like the groomsmen and i am getting the mom's a double picture frame with a picture of them and each of us when we were little and then the other spot will be a picture from the wedding... we figure it won't cost much but will show appreciation and be sentimental

Re: are parent gifts necessary?
It's really not necessary especially if you have things from the wedding you are giving them.
My parents are paying for the reception - so it's just something to say thanks. I would LOVE to give them more but I just can't afford much
You do what you can - no parent would be upset if they didnt get something.

Re: are parent gifts necessary?
Im sending my rents to Vegas... they paid for the entire RH which is a very hefty bill.
Im also giving FH's parents money towards a trip somewhere since they paid for the DJ & Honeymoon.
We are giving them albums as well.

Re: are parent gifts necessary?
We didn't give the parents anything at the time of the wedding. They get an album and a dvd but we also didn't have extra money for their gifts at the end I don't know if its really so necessary per say just just my opinion.

Re: are parent gifts necessary?
Instead of getting them a parent album, we are going to make one for them with pictures from when we were both wittleeee up until our wedding. I feel it's more personal and more of a surprise to them

Yikes! My parents paid for the reception, but we didn't get them a gift! And, if we get them a gift, do we get for FILs? And although my parents are paying for reception, dress, florist, we are still paying for a lot, too!!! UGH!

Re: are parent gifts necessary?
what previous posters said, it's mostly necessary if they are paying for the wedding, but what you are doing is great.
You may want to add like a bouquet of flowers for each (maybe find out what kind of flowers they had at their wedding and try to combine their flowers with yours to make it more sentimental rather than pricey) and a gift card to dinner/nice bottle of wine?
My parents are paying for our wedding, and we are all (my whole family...14 of us) are going on a vacation afterwards, so I am geting them something they can use on the vacation plus an excursion. HTH

If they are paying for the wedding, I'd say def get them something-- anything-- big or small, just to show your appreciation... my parents are paying and I have no idea what to get them, but I'll think of something!

we are not. both parents yelled at us when we told them we wanted to. We will just give them an album after the wedding.

Re: are parent gifts necessary?
I personally feel that the gifts are a token of gratitude and appreciation.
If your parents are paying for the wedding, or parts of the wedding, it is, IMO, a must.
If you are paying for everything, in its entirety, yourselves, then something small, like frames, or parent albums, are ok.
