Are Seaman's, Levitz really not the best in terms of furniture?

Hi.

We are looking for furniture for our apt. We need a living room set and a small dining room set.

We looked in Seamans, ABC Home and Carpet, Futurama, Kelly's and I went to a North Carolina Company outlet place today to look for stuff.

In Seaman's I saw a cute dining room set- but I have been hearing from people that the furniture is poorly made and will not last long. I have not been to Levitz yet, but I have also heard from a couple of people that the customer service is not the greatest.

Please tell me your thoughts and experiences.

Thanks.

Re: Are Seaman's, Levitz really not the best in terms of furniture?

Levitz:

I went to my sisters house on Saturday. She took me to my nephew's room to show me the new platform bed she brought him from Levitz, It was broken. Only 4 days after they delivered it the thing came apart. She called Levitz and they don't want to do anything about it. The repair guy from Levitz came and told her 'I don't understand why they don't want to give you a new one since you can obviously tell that it's the manufacturers fault. Just deny it with your credit card company and keep calling Levitz about it'. She called Levitz and they said 'sorry there is nothing we can do as it is the customers fault for damage' She told them 'F...you and I am taking this to the media'. Now she called FOX Five and disputing the charge and stuff.

I will keep you girls updated.

Re: Are Seaman's, Levitz really not the best in terms of furniture?

I used to work for 7 On Your Side and we got TONS of calls about Seaman's and Levitz. There is not much you can do on your own, without brining in an outside party. I got my bedroom set, and IL's got a bunch of furniture at The Place in Farmindale (on 110 right by Seaman's). It's held up great and we have no complaints.

Re: Are Seaman's, Levitz really not the best in terms of furniture?

We ordered our couch through Seaman's only because they are not the manufacturer, and we wanted the long payment plan. We regretted it big time because their delivery SUC KS!!!!!!!!!!

The sofas are beautiful though, but we went elsewhere for everything else. We also went to The Place in Farmingdale like Kelly. They were great, and the furniture is beautiful.

My sister ordered her kids BR sets from Seaman's, and not once, not twice, but THREE TIMES the delivery men showed up with broken furniture. A drawer was cracked in half, a headboard was cracked....just completely insane stuff.

Also, if you get deliveries on Saturday you are likely to have the worst delivery men. They refuse to do ANYTHING extraneous to get your furniture in the house because of lawsuits, and how little time they have between delivery times. Our delivery men refused to go through our window to get the couch in (it didn't fit in our hallway), and we had to send the couch back TWICE and request new delivery men. The 2nd time, they sent the same guys and they just out and out refused. Only when we changed our delivery day did they send different men...and they finally agreed to just put the couch through the window.

Can't stand them!!!

Re: Are Seaman's, Levitz really not the best in terms of furniture?

Its cheap for a reason.

Seamans is what I call 'disposable' furniture.

Perfectly fine if you plan on replacing a few years down the road.

If you are looking for something really well made and that will last - seamans is not for you.

I have a couch from Seamens taht i bought b/c my old couch was just driving me crazy and i didnt want to invest in something really expensive at the time. It does the job for now but its by no means 'good'.

Kysha my dad gets his furniture from The Place in Farmingdale. He is in the process of getting a new bedroom set for their bedroom and the quality and price is really good. They always have new furniture coming in so he goes there often.

Re: Are Seaman's, Levitz really not the best in terms of furniture?

I definitely agree that Seaman's and Levitz are cheap for a reason - made poorly but cheap pricing allows for the consumer to get new furniture every few yrs. I have a wooden kitchen table from seamans, within 3 yrs all of the chairs broke numerous times - legs broke, back broke, i fixed them several times but finally had to replace them. The table itself is a bit sturdier, but not great.

If you want good furniture -- try Drexel Heritage. My parents have always bought and that stuff lasts for a long time. Classic but it's not cheap though.

Re: Are Seaman's, Levitz really not the best in terms of furniture?

Wow, I guess we were lucky. We bought a couch, loveseat and ottoman from Levitz a couple years ago. We knew we'd be in our apartment for only a few years and didn't want to invest in anything too $$$, so we went for the disposable, inexpensive furniture.

No problems with delivery or financing (we did the 'no payment for xx months deal').

Four years later, the furniture is still in decent shape.

Re: Are Seaman's, Levitz really not the best in terms of furniture?

I've heard the same as most everyone else - bad things.

Rt 110 in Farmingdale has a plethora of furniture stores on the strip - going north & south. Macy's has good furniture - there's a Macy's furniture store & outlet in Carle Place (or there abouts).

Re: Are Seaman's, Levitz really not the best in terms of furniture?

I've bought a few things from Bare Boards in Bohemia - a corner sofa, coffee table and end table. (they have another store up on Route 25 that goes by another name - Country something or other?) I haven't had them long so durability remains to be seen but the service has been great.

Both deliveries came the day they promised. My DH was home when the coffee table was delivered and missed the fact that there was a small chip in the corner of the glass inset. I called the next morning and they said no problem, they'd order another and call us when it came in. I'm confident that will be the case because when the sofa manufacturer forgot to include the arm covers we had ordered they got those for us with no arguments too.

Re: Are Seaman's, Levitz really not the best in terms of furniture?

I wouldn't say that they are top quality furniture...but for stuff that's pretty decent and that you don't want forever...it's not that bad.

About 6 months ago, I ordered an entire bedroom set. I had no problems with delivery, they put the headboard together and the mirror on the dresser too.

Everything still looks great and we're very happy.

Re: Are Seaman's, Levitz really not the best in terms of furniture?

I had a lot of problems getting my Levitz set...setting up delivery was a nightmare...Took way longer then they said...Then they didn't have want I ordered, and I had to change from a sleeper to a reg sofa the day before it was delivered! They gave me back the extra money I paid..but still it wasn't want we needed.
