A lot of us live in that area!
If it is Middle Country Schools they are good but not great.
We live in Centereach, right next door

selden and centereach aren't the greatest but they certainly aren't the worst...i live around the corner in pt. jeff. sta. from what i've heard comsewogue sd is better. All in all though I would consider selden and centereach good starting out areas

My friend recently bought in Selden. They are very happy there. They have non problem with the school district- they are OK- not the best but certainly not the worst...

my DH and I moved here 2- well going on 3 years ago and LOVE it! My neighbors are wonderful and my neighborhood is so quiet and safe.

We got a great house for an amazing price- put some money into it and now it's doubled in value since we bought it

There are so many new young couples moving into this area- redoing houses, siding, landscaping etc.

We are in the middle country SD wich is average as far as school districts go. I have heard it's getting better and some of my good friends had gone to school here and grew up here and have said that they love it here and schools were fine.

Good luck! Maybe we will be neighbors some day Like Julz said, there are many of us LIWers that live here now and love it!

I agree! I think Centereach and Selden are a 'hot' area for young couples to be moving in. If you would have asked me 10 years ago it definitely would not have been my favorite area but now living by it I can say the area is very nice, tons of shopping, tons of things to do and lots of young families moving in. As the young families move in I am seeing old things that were eye sores being torn down and new and attractive buildings replacing it!

Middle Country School district as the others have said-not my favorite but by far not the worst on Long Island. I would say it is right in the middle to average.

Thanks for the info everyone. We have been looking around at houses and for some reason the houses in these areas are much cheaper than other areas we are looking. We have narrowed down our search to Coram, Middle Island, Centereach and Selden.

IMHO- I would not buy a house in Middle Island or Coram. They are not so nice. I think they might have a nice area, but it is surrounded by more bad areas than good. Selden and Centereach are much better. Middle Island and Coram are in the Longwood SD which is NOT good! My mom's friend teaches in Longwood and had advised me not to buy a house in that SD.

I agree but not about Centereach.

Centereach has one of the best, if not THE best, public library on LI.

I agree 100%, but I think I have been banned there since I have books that have been overdue for 2 years now!

I agree with Lora, I would not buy in Middle Island or Coram. I know that they also are getting better but they are just too close for comfort to Gordon Heights.

Parts of Coram are in the Middle Country school district...and while I agree with the Gordon Heights comment, the W (and maybe still, the F??) section is a good area - the Tanglewood Hills section. There are others, for sure.

Centereach is more congested than Selden and Coram, IMO.

I live in Middle Island on the border of Ridge and I love it. The school district is getting much better, but most people don't like it because it's a mix of kids. Which I think is a pretty horrible reason for its bad reputation. I live near the Ridge border in a beautiful new housing development.

I used to live in Selden on the border of Centereach, but the area was way too congested for me.

Good luck in your search! Really check out an area...you may be surprised!

The SD is about average for LI. There are many worse SDs on the island I can think of. But even so it is still above average when compared to the rest of the country!
Even though the SD is not the best, for us personally it was one of the best we could afford. We don't plan on needing the schools for about 8-10 years. Who knows if we will even live here or what the schools will be like in 8-10 years...even though a good SD helps with resale I don't see that being a problem.
As for being congested I find that true on or just off of Middle Country Road. Once you get into our neighborhood it is not congested at all. it reminds me of Kings Park actually. I really like the neighborhood we live in . There are neighborhood watch signs up and all the neighbors are so friendly.
We did look at areas of Centereach and Selden that scared me! One spot in Selden near the independence shopping center that looked sooo trashy. There was a swastika spray painted in the middle of the road right in front of the house we were looking at But then we also saw some houses in Selden that were in really nice areas. Personally I like Northern Selden better than southern.
All towns have good and bad areas.. make sure you drive around the area a lot.
Good Luck with your search and if you have any further questions about Centereach you can FM me

We live in Centereach on the border of Selden! When we first started looking in this area, like Julz I saw a few house that either the house or the neighborhood scared me! Then we saw our house and fell in love! Although we live on a semi-busy road I love the area so far! Our neighbors are nice, the area is clean and well maintained! And I have to say that to date the Town of Brookhaven has been great at clearing our road from snow, garbage pick up etc! I cant complain! Although it is a little congested, I like the convience of it! Both DH and I work long hours at times, so having any store, supermarket or fast food within 5 minutes is a great luxury!
Like Julz said about hte SD its average! Longwood however MANY people steered us away from! And Julz is right, who knows what the SD will be in 5-10 years! Thats more than enough time for it to honestly change for the better or worse you just dont know for sure!

I am really happy that we chose to move here! We closed 7 months ago and based on what other houses on our block have sold for, our house has increased in value and compared to other places we looked, we got so much mroe for our money!

Good LucK!
