Re: are they necessary?
if your having a lot of tables set up than i would say yes they are needed so that way you dont have people walking around trying to figure out where to sit.....

Re: are they necessary?
Honestly, as a guest, I prefer when the hosts take the time to think out the seating arrangements. Otherwise, it becomes awkward for the guests who don't really know anyone else.
I've ended up sitting at the 'old aunts' table at a shower because I didn't get there early enough to claim a seat with the people I'd have more in common with ...

Good question!!!! Our small tea tables will be so full of stuff, but I'll ask Debi if they're necessary. Mary MOB

Even if you don't assign individual seats at the table, I think its considerate as a host to assign the guests to the tables where they should sit

Re: are they necessary?
YES i really think so and here is why
for a person attending a shower where they dont know many people it can be VERY awkward. If you dont know most of the people there and dont have a placecard then youre going to feel kind of lost. You dont want to walk over to a table where others there want another family member or friend to sit and deal with the awkwardness. You dont know who is family and who wants to sit with who so youre going to feel uncomfortable walking over to tables to see where you can sit. When you know most of the people there its fine but otherwise if i went and there was no placecard i'd probably have to stand on the side somewhere to even figure out where i'd sit

Re: are they necessary?
I didn't want to assign seats or tables for my shower. I found it stupid. FSIL (FH's brothers wife) did it and I felt awkward because I was sitting with my FH's family(mom, grandma, 2 cousins who are older than me by a lot) meanwhile i had my cousins at the shower because my FIL's live right across the street from them and knew them and they are my age. But I wasnt sitting with them because I am marrying FBILs brother. I felt so weird.
But my mom was looking at places for the shower and she said alot of the resturants seh went to require at least table assignments because of food being served as well as drinks. And it makes it easier for the waiters.
So yeah I am most likely doing table arraingments not seats though.

Re: are they necessary?
I only gotten placecards at BS when its been hosted at a restaurant. Most of the time the BMs would have the tables set up for us with the place cards.
my BMs are hosting the event at the home of my MOH, so since its not at a restuarant, I doubt they'll be using placecards.

Re: are they necessary?
I think my mom is doing placecards. Sh doesn't want anyone to feel uncomforatble if they get there on the later side and have to sit with people they don't know.
