I didn't want to assign seats or tables for my shower. I found it stupid.
FSIL (FH's brothers wife) did it and I felt awkward because I was sitting with my FH's family(mom, grandma, 2 cousins who are older than me by a lot) meanwhile i had my cousins at the shower because my FIL's live right across the street from them and knew them and they are my age. But I wasnt sitting with them because I am marrying FBILs brother. I felt so weird.
The situation you described above isn't that 'placecards are stupid at a shower' its that the people who arranged the seating at the shower you went to just didn't do the right thing by you ....
Had they sat you with your cousins, I doubt you would have had a complaint.

YES i really think so and here is why
for a person attending a shower where they dont know many people it can be VERY awkward. If you dont know most of the people there and dont have a placecard then youre going to feel kind of lost. You dont want to walk over to a table where others there want another family member or friend to sit and deal with the awkwardness. You dont know who is family and who wants to sit with who so youre going to feel uncomfortable walking over to tables to see where you can sit. When you know most of the people there its fine but otherwise if i went and there was no placecard i'd probably have to stand on the side somewhere to even figure out where i'd sit
THIS is EXACTLY what I was trying to say above ...

Re: are they necessary?
I have a feeling my FMIL wont be getting placecards...I would prefer it if she did though..

Re: are they necessary?
I have always seen them at showers. I even highlighted a list of who knows who on the guest list to make it easier for my MOH/sister to create tables.
