Are you all allowing your Dj to...

Are you all allowing your Dj to...

Play 50s/60s rock like 'the twist' and 'rock around the clock?' The reason i'm asking is that FMIL called FH last night and made a special request for 'rock around the clock.' FH and I had both already decided that we were going to steer clear of anything well, cheesy-ish. He told her 'absolutely not' and now we both feel like jerks but at the same time feel that we should be able to determine what kind of musical vibe we want at our wedding. We'll probably just end up playing the song but just venting a little and wondering what your thoughts are.

Hope you are all having a wonderful weekend!

LoL sorry to laugh but...were you guys taking requests? Is this a sentimental song to her?

I dont see the harm in playing the one song for her i gues.... not sure how you guys feel about that

Personally, I find it's songs like that that get my older family up to dance. So yes, I will absolutely 'allow' songs like that. If my dj doesn't play 'Run Around Sue' I'm going to be pissed!

FH & I are actually all about that kinda music, along with a whole lot of Frank, Dean, etc etc - Rock & Roll and Rat Pack!!! As well as the new pop/dance music we love as well... I don't really find it cheesy - the things on my no play list are the group line dance things --> electric slide, the new slide thingy dance, etc.

Lol no we weren't taking requests it was just a random phone call, which I guess means she REALLY wants us to play the song. Sorry, I didn't mean to call the music cheesy. I know it's fun music and I think it's true, it does tend to get the older guests up and dancing. I keep forgetting that it's not just going to be our friends at the wedding.

We don't want any of those Group Dance songs played at all... oldies fine, but no electric slide!

We have the 50's/60's mix on our must play list. I feel it's a fun song that hits all the classics from that time and a lot of people like to dance to it. We're not doing a full song from the 50's or 60's though.

Yes, I'll play those songs, but there are a lot of current music that is on my Do Not Play List.

Its those olddie, cheesy songs that get EVERYONE up on the dance floor! From age 18-80! I've been to enough parties to know that lol. Once Shout comes on, its like a mass migration to the dance floor haha,
I'm totally going to be playing those songs at the wedding, i dont think its cheesy at all. I much rather those than some of the new school music that stinks lol....or anything that is too stuck up. Then again, my FH and I are very fun and funny people.

I like that idea...of not playing the full songs but still having a couple of them.

Thanks guys, your input has been helpful! I think my FH and I need to stop being such music nazis.

The cheesy wedding songs are the best ones because everyone knows them and everyone gets up to dance to them!

I do agree that I am not a big fan of the electric slide, macarana and the chicken dance. But its always funny to see aunt esther shakin it on the dance floor, cause Im sure it hasnt been shook in a while

Re: Are you all allowing your Dj to...

If you're totally against playing it during the reception...can you play it during cocktail hour? Idk if that's the type of song you'd play during dinner...but at least she'd get to hear it if its her favorite...but that doesn't guarantee that she won't put her fork down and run out into the middle of the floor and start getting down lol.

I'm guilty of being a cha-cha slide fan.

lmao I actually went to a wedding, i won't mention where, and they played a ton of that music.....and all i could remember thinking was that wouldn't fly on LI lmaoo!! maybe i'd play the one song for FMIL but personally i think that kind of music is tacky and i'd steer clearr! ( can be kinda hillbilly-ish which was where the wedding was)
