Are you all lying on your invite about the start time
Some people tell us to say 5:00 pm on the invite for a 5:30 ceremony (at reception venue - not a church). Others say this isn't fair. I just know LI traffic in the summer and know people will be late. It's a short ceremony anyway so I want people to be there

yes, we are doing the same thing for our church ceremony. I have attended weddings that people come late. Our ceremony is at 3 so we are putting 2 or even 230 on the invite.

No way! I think guests know that they have to be on time for the ceremony if they are planning on attending. I think that you risk making your guests angry when they are waiting for you.... JMO.

Well, not exactly. The invite says 5:00. We didn't mention there is a half hour hospitality before the ceremony. (we are getting married at the hall). I would have if I thought it were necessary. you can't count on people to be there on time, and you need to allow for traffic and people getting lost.
I don't imagine people getting angry waiting for you. Everyone expects the bride to be a little late, and assumes it's circumstances beyond your control.
I'd say it's not a bad idea.

I didn't - I understand that you don't want people to come late - but in fairness for the many who do come on time if you put 5 people will come 4:30-450- and then they will sit around and wait for 40 mins to 1 hour! I went to one wedding where this happened and the guests were pretty annoyed by the time the wedding started they thought that the bride either bolted or that it was really rude since many left work to be at the wedding (friday night) and that if the wedding wasn't going to start that they could have stayed longer rather than taking a 1/2 day.
I think you could put say 15 mins early but I wouldn't do more than that

Re: Are you all lying on your invite about the start time
We were married at our hall & put down 5PM on invite, bu ceremony actually started around 5:20- 5:30(planned that way). And there were still people that came after the ceremony started & some who missed our ceremony all together, so I would say lie. Noone who was there at 5pm ever complained!

I'm putting half hour before. Everyone expects that the bride will be late anyway so 30 min won't kill them.

Re: Are you all lying on your invite about the start time
I'm going to lie! I have to otherwise most of my family will miss it all together. I will probably lie by 30mins for the ceremony. If you ask me, it depends on the familes and only you and your FH know them best. I know my family will be late and I will be lying about the start time of the reception, not by 30mins, but by TWO HOURS!!!!

We are probably putting 6:00 on the invite for 6:30 ceremony. Put we are having 1/2 hour of music & champagne & strawberries before the ceremony so people wont get bored.

No. If I did that, our families would be sitting in the pews wondering why the ceremony isn't starting when it's supposed to. I know when I'm a guest, I'm staring at the clock on the wall of the church anxious for the ceremony to begin so I can see how beautiful everyone looks.

No we put the actual start time. If people don't make it, they don't make it. Anyone who really wants to be there will make an effort to be on time.

This is something to think about, I might lie too, but then I may say on the invite Arrive at 11:00-Ceremony to start at 11:30, I don't know, how does that sound?

I put the actual time. People that are usually late will be late anyway.

Re: Are you all lying on your invite about the start time
I'm lying my butt off. No one in my family expects it to be ontime. I did 30 mins out of consideration for his family - for mine I would have done an hour.
Sorry, those of you with families who arrive on time to things have NO IDEA what it is to have to deal with families who don't.

I'm putting 11:00 for an 11:30 ceremony. We're getting married at the hall, and there will be music and champagne beforehand for those who come early.

My invitations say 5:00 p.m. for our 5:30 p.m. ceremony.
The Swan Club strongly suggested we do that based on their experiences!

This is what I actully feel. People don't want a on time bride...walking in with the late guests!!!! I push my ceremony time back from 3 to 3:30-- but, I don't think...I could put 3 to start. What about the people who arrive x-tra early.....
