depends on their age i guess.... i wont let my kid walk out looking like Britney spears dressed her
(1999.. too slutty or 2005...too trashy)
but for the most part i think i will.

eta: my kids' gonna be hot though. im gonna totally buy her the cutest stylish clothes

(i mean if i already dress my DOG well, i think my kids better look better than them!)

i should've said an age range... i think that defiantely makes a difference... but i was just looking at pics of myself when i was little, and i asked my mom 'why the hell did you let me go out dressed like that?!?!' and she goes' we let you wear what you wanted'

Hmm...interesting question. My mother used to let me dress myself when it was the weekend and we weren't going out anywhere (I'd pick out some pretty whacky stuff) and then she'd usually dress me for school and stuff. She'd let me give my opinions and stuff though. I think I'd pretty much do the same thing.

I think children need structure and shouldn't be left to do EVERYTHING by themselves. This comes from a day spent at the Sunrise Mall. I saw kids walking around with their parents looking horrible. Kids with tank tops, UGG oots (or flip flops)and mini skirts when it is 50 degrees out? C'mon now. (psst - the fashion mags say UGGS are out anyway.)

If they are young, you can offer kids choices between 2 or three outfits that you bought together. As a teacher, I have seen the results of parents who do not pay attention when their kids get dressed. They may wear dirty clothes, clothes that don't fit, clothes that are mismatched or not in season etc. I know that every situation is different, but the first thing that runs through my head is 'How could a parent let their kid walk out like that?'

I will go shopping with my children and help them pick out clothing. When they are young, I will give them a choice of 2 or 3 outfits to wear the next morning.

ETA: Goldi, I totally didn't read your response until after I posted! Great minds think alike!

goldi..
yeah, like when/if i let her pick out her own clothes i will, BUT of course i will not let her walk out and have people thinking 'how could her mom let her out of the house like that?'
i hope to give her a good fashion sense.

ALOT of the children here dress alittle odd. i dont know if is that the parents let them pick out their own clothes, or the parents pick them out badly (therea ALOT of artists here and they dress 'different' too) and/or its just cuz their parents are hipsters and its supposed to be deck

Good answer. My mother NEVER let me out in a shirt that was stained or wrinkled or had a hole in it. If she thought something didn't fit me right or was too much, she would let me know and even though I'd get mad at her opinions sometimes, I would always change into something else. A lot of parents just don't even seem to care any more.

That's b/c parents are too concerned about being their child's friends and are afraid to say 'no' to them these days. I feel like DH and I are going to be pretty tough parents when needed.

i Totally agree with that!!! Also, i feel like some Moms are like trying to live vicariously through their daughters. Me and DH were in Abercrombie a few weeks ago, and this mom holds up a shirt that looked more like a hankerchief than a shirt, and yells to her daughter, 'OMG, this is soo cute, it would look fab on you'... um hellllllllooooo the girl was like 14.

Why are parents so afraid to say 'no' to their children now? It's absolutely ridiculous. My sister's kids are so unbelievably spoiled and rude and they're never satisfied and it's all because she will NOT say 'no' to them. I will never let my kids get that way. Her kids are more control of her than she is in control of them. It's sad.
