During my lunch hour, I read an interesting article in Oprah Magazine (LOVE this mag!) about setting goals in your life. It really got me thinking about my career and my happiness with it. I work as an admin. assistant in a patent and trademark law firm (YAWN). The pay, believe it or not, is fantastic -- because I actually have to know ALOT about patent law (God, take me, please). Even though the money is good, I don't enjoy it and I dread getting up in the morning.
I also work part-time as a licensed veterinary technican -- which is basically an animal nurse. I take blood, x-rays, IV sedation, euthanasia (unfortunately), etc. The pay is very low, but I love animals so much that I stay on. I don't love the job as much as I thought I would (it's alot of hard, physical work and the pay stinks) but I know that I want to work with animals in some way.
The Oprah article really got me thinking about what would 'feed my soul' so to speak. Are any of you lucky enough to LOVE what you do and are fulfilled by it? Inquiring minds wanna know!!!!
I was thinking how cool it would be to own my own pet boarding/grooming place. The money would (hopefully) be good, I'd be my own boss, and I'd get to 'play' with the animals!

Re: Are you living your 'dream'??
My life is my 'dream' except for the job part and I consider that just a temporary set back.
Being happy with your career is difficult for most people at some point in their lives.

Re: Are you living your 'dream'??
Let me start by saying that I am NOT an Oprah fan at all in any way shape or form. I think it is pretty funny for one of her magazines to talk about living a dream. She has her dream. Not all of us are as fortunate. Good for her but enough already. I am over Oprah-fied.
For myself? Am I living my dream? I dont know. I just live each day one by one, put money in the bank so I dont end up on the street in my old age and wear my seatbelt so that the moron behind me who insists on tailgating me on a rainy day doesn't send me through my windshield.
How's THAT for a dream OPRAH?

I know what you mean-he sat me down and suggested that I make a change-he has never seen me like this-I try and think if there were 4 walls and just me what would I be happy doing all day-

Re: Are you living your 'dream'??
Interesting topic!
well, most of my set goals have been achieved and I am where i want to be in life. bought a house, made a certain amount of money by age 25, getting married to a great man and on my way to starting a family
HOWEVER, I have set only realistic and achievable goals for myself and although i have succeeded at them, i am not living my dream in the perfect world.
in my dream world i would maybe have my own travel company, or run a great hotel or something of the sort. i would have gone into a different, more competitive career path and took a chance to make less money in order to pursue a career of happiness
i chose the route with more job opportunities in a school where i was given scholarships and the pay is good when you graduate. i guess my goals were more monetary. although im happy i did it, sometimes i wish i was in a different career altogether.

Re: Are you living your 'dream'??
Well, honestly I don't know if I have a 'dream,' but I was working in career that I hated and would dread going to work everyday. Now I am happy at work, and hope that I have potential to grow in the industry. I am marrying a wonderful man that I am totally in love with. I am very satisfied with my life right now. The only thing that would make it better would be more $$, but who doesn't need that?

Re: Are you living your 'dream'??
I do love my job, maybe not everyday, but most days. Is it my 'dream job?' NO. But I'm happy. I really can't complain the only thing I don't have is a house which after the wedding is our next big project.

This post isn't about Oprah. But I will say that her success wasn't handed to her on a silver platter, she worked for it. Being fortunate shouldn't mean not encouraging people to live out a dream, does it?

Same here i am in the same industry and I love the industry i recently switched and I am not happy about the place I am at, there is not enough work (yes I am saying this), there are only three girls in the office (so small) and I am so used to a bigger office. I want out but it pays well and I don't want to look like I bounce around in the industry. I never felt this way I hate sunday nights becuase my work week starts again, i used to look forward to going to work!!!

I agree with your Oprah comments. Sometimes Oprah is much-too focused on achieving and on financial & material wealth. Other times, I think she's okay, though. (Like giving $100,000 to individuals who find child sex offenders.)
My dream for me is simple (finding things I like to experience when I can & while I'm living. Like chocolate, or a great laugh (this site), even crying is great because you are experiencing all kinds of emotions & loving, too.) Finding a career you like is cool, too.
By the way, I love your pet idea and it sounds achievable!

Re: Are you living your 'dream'??
When I was a litle girl I had dreamed of entertaining, being in B'way plays and dancing on stage. That dream is long gone now, it just wasn't practical for me. In college I got a degree in education and now I dream of one day being a school guidance counselor or working with kids in some way, even as an events coordinator. I hate my current job in the business world and I really want to move on with my career but 1) I know it really isn't that bad and it could be a lot worse and 2) I can't afford to take a pay cut right now.
All in all I know I'm very fortunate to be where I am. I'm so happy that I've found my FH and altho we're not living the life I've always dreamed of I'm glad to be sharing it with him, wherever that may bring us.
Good topic!!

Re: Are you living your 'dream'??
My job now is nowhere near my dream job. It was supposed to be a temporary 'first job out of college' job but I ended up staying for 3 years!!! I'm kind of glad the company is relocating to PA in June b/c this way I can really focus on what I want to do. I can go back to school for teaching and get my dream job!
