Our wedding is at a vineyard, so by nature, it will be a little more on the casual side than most weddings...but we don't want people to assume too casual.
I think we've done a good job at designing our invites so they convey this, but some people are clueless (including FMIL - don't ask! - we're afraid she may steer people too casual).
Basically, we'd describe our attire as formal (for men, sport jacket and tie is fine)...do you think we need to spell this out somewhere?
I'm thinking if it's not a black tie affair, it looks funny on the actual invite or reception card. Any suggestions?

Eh...I don't think you need to tell anyone what to wear....I mean, black tie is fine to write but other than that, I am sure people will figure it out.

we didn't...we decided people knew what to wear to a wedding and that telling them was arbitrary and we don't care as long as they can make it.

We did. Because our ceremony is during the day and we are having a 'beach/tropical' theme I wanted to be sure that our guests still knew we were having a formal affair. I wrote 'Formal attire requested'

Our ceremony is going to be at the hall so we put 'Formal reception to follow' to let e/o know that they should dress fancy.

On the RSVP we wrote dressy-casual attire - just cause we are having a more laid back affair, and we didn't want people coming in tuxes and evening gowns
ETA: SO I have the opposite situation as most

Re: Are you putting suggested attire in your invites?
ours is a less formal event - but we opted to put info about attire on our website, and not the invites.
Here's what we have on our site, on our 'FAQ' page:
What is the appropriate attire for the wedding?
Laurie's mom likes to describe the dress as: 'casually elegant'. Victor likes to say, 'don't roll up in your jeans'. Laurie will be wearing a pretty fancy dress and Victor will be wearing a suit. Because the ceremony and reception will be held outdoors, casual suits or sports jackets for the men and cocktail dresses for the women will be appropriate. Keep in mind when selecting shoes, that although there will be a dance floor - you will also be walking on the grass.

I put 'Formal Reception immediately following ceremony...... ' I don't want black tie but I also don't want people coming in kahkis and polo shirts.

I'm putting black tie optional because I really wanted black tie, but it know its such a hassle for the guys. I like when everyone is really dressy!!
