Are you supposed to

register for your engagement party? I thought you were only suppose to register for your shower! The invitations are out and I haven`t registered anywhere. At my FH`s sister`s party, everyone just gave her $$ and I`ve pretty much given $$ as well at other engagement parties I`ve been to. We didn`t even think of registering for gifts this early on. Just wondering...any advice would help. Thanks as always.

No... you don't have too...

People at our party mostly gave us money, and some decided to give us Lenox. Usually you just register for you shower and wedding. People will give you what they want. To be honest, when we had our party, it ended up being a surprise, and we weren't even expecting any gifts. I don't think I'd expect anything at an engagement party even if we had known about it. We didn't even know people had brought cards until everyone left. :)

I agree. I do not think you have to register. I think it is better to register closer to your shower date. Styles change and your taste may even change. The department stores will tell you not to register too early for bedding and stuff like that b/c they can be discontinued by the time you have your shower. I only had an engagement dinner party and my FMIL wanted me to register but I did not. People either gave us $$, gift certificates and few gifts (mostly champagne flutes).

My experience

My family wanted me to register early. People started asking my parents pretty early on where I was registered so I did. I got 1/2 $$ for my e-party, and 1/2 gifts. This is just my opinion but I was glad that I did register. Most people who gave me gifts purchased them off of my registy so I got things I really loved. If you are not registered people who want to give you a gift tend to purchase frames, vases and stuff that might not match your taste. It doesn't hurt to register for a few things such as crystal or china or even everyday dishes.

You don't need too. Guests to an engagement party are not expected to bring gifts. We did register for ours because everyone kept asking my mother where we were registed and what to get. But like I said not all guests will bring a gift and they are not obligated too -- and don't feel rushed to register yet. Plus items in the stores will change depending on how far in advance you are registering before your shower/wedding.

I registered before my engagement party...

... and I am very glad I did. Lots of people asked for registry information, and ended up buying gifts off of it. My registry has been up over a year now, and I haven't had any issues with items being discontinued. Its easy enough to add items anyhow if that does happen... Best of luck!

I registered before my engagement party...

my mother was very forceful on this...Her relatives wanted to get us things and the very first day we registered, something was bought!!! I do agree about the bedding and bath though...I just picked mine out this week. and I have changed my casual plates...but if you go to a store that gives you cash back for it...theres no problems...

Registering...

My friend registered for hers...and I thought it was great. It made my life a little easier. I am on a tight budget, and I was able to buy something within my means, without having to worry about giving a cash gift that I might have felt 'cheap' about. If you worry your tastes might change in terms of colors, then register for everything but china and bedding...you'll be amazed at how long your list could be anyway...good luck!
