Re: Arizona or North Carolina areas??
I was suppose to move to NC 4 years ago but my job kept me here...I was going to a town called Jamestown...It is a beautiful area...Majority of the houses are less then 10 yrs old...The communities are made up of mostly New York & New Jersey residents...
Another nice area is Highpoint...Very beautiful homes & great schools!

Re: Arizona or North Carolina areas??
I lived near Chapel Hill, NC for a while a few years ago. We liked it, but DH found a job back up here so we moved back. My brother and his family live in Raleigh and he loves it down there. He's always trying to get us to move back- I'd consider it maybe one day though we just bought a house up here so it'll be a little while. I think if I were to move off LI, NC would probably be where I'd go though I like the Raleigh, Chaple Hill area because really, there are so many Northerners there. Some other areas are just too 'Southern' for me.

My husband and I just decided to move to Charlotte, NC. I got a transfer through my employer (and i get to keep my NY salary- YAY!). It's a beautiful area, tons of housing, very very affordable. I can not wait until February 1. Good luck!

I've been to N.C. but we visited DH's aunt and uncle who live practially on the N.C./S.C. border. The nearest cities are Hendersonville in NC and Greenville and Spartanburg in S.C. (there's a Greenville in NC too but it's much more north). The area is rural-ish and near the mountains. It's georgeous. I did some reasearch on work there - there are some big businesses in Greenville and Spartanburg in S.C. We love it there and want to move there in the future. ETA: it's not too rural, like I have not seen farms down there, I guess it's like eastern LI.

My cousin lives in Anthem AZ, about 40 minutes outside of Phoenix. I was just there in September visiting and if I could convince FH that his mother will not, in fact, wither away if we move (despite her objections to the contrary), I'd be moving there in the morning.

We live in Charlotte too! Just moved here in July. We LOVE it. Couldn't pay us to move back to NY!!! We even make more $ here than we did in NY... and the cost of living is SO much cheaper. Life is great!!!
meghanmetz... what part of Charlotte are you moving to? We're in Ballantyne...

Lunatrek,
We have NO idea where we are going to be in Charlotte. I just got my transfer officially 'approved' last week. We are going to be down there in the next month or so and are talking to RE agents. We were in Ballantyne in September when we down there.
Do you or your DH work in 'uptown' I guess that is what they call the city area. How is the traffic in the morning from where you are?

Re: Arizona or North Carolina areas??
I live in NC, the Raleigh area. I've lived in Charlotte, but didn't really care for it. In that area you can check out Lake Wylie, SC (near Charlotte, NC), Mooresville, or Lake Norman. In the Raleigh area, North Raleigh, Morrisville, Cary and Apex. I personally love the Cary/Apex area. The School district there is great. We've lived here for over 5 years and absolutely love it. We would never move back to LI. We miss some of the food and friends and family, but when you visit LI, you see why you left! LI is disgusting compared to here IMO. Some parts are nice but down here. There are only some parts that are not nice. For example, here there are no garbage on the ground, on LI, it's filthy even before you get there. Don't get me wrong... you don't realize how LI really is until you move away! Most people who leave LI, would never move back.
Oh... those towns I mentioned are majority of where the NY's move down to.
