Re: Arms
low weight and high reps is a waiste of time and won't get you very far.
You need to loose fat by eating less, and cleaner and exercise regularly. Do Cardio adn weight train 3-4 times a week.
At the same time train your upper body and lower body using weights that you can lift for 8-10 reps (to start, then go to 8 reps max) for 3- 4 sets, once or twice per week per body part.
hope this helps. This are some general tips for weight training for actual results.

Re: Arms
For your arms to get big (muscle) you'd have to spend a LOT of time in the gym. Trust me; I've been lifting weights for 7 years and my arms are kind of big but not huge and ripped. It takes a lot of effort and a really strict diet to get that way. The best way to slim your arms is to lower your body fat by eating a healthy diet and lifting weights that are heavy enough where you're fatigued by around rep 10 - 12. You can go even heavier than that and lower your reps, and you can also alternate with using heavy weight/low reps for a couple of weeks and lighter weight/higher reps for a week to mix things up. You don't want your body to get used to doing the same thing over and over. DO NOT use those puny little weights that you see the models using in Shape magazine. 3 lb dumbbells will get you NOWHERE!!!!

Re: Arms
as much as you can lift for 8 - 12 reps. I do only 8 reps per arm for 3 sets of an exercise, and do two exercises.
it all depends on your fitness and strength level. I started using ten lbs. ten years abgo, now I am up to 17.5 lbs. for 8 reps. So, try the tens first. If it is too light (you can do more that 10-12 reps) go up to 12lbs. if it is too heavy(can't do 8 reps) go down to the 8 lbs.
or you can use a bar. try a 10, or 20 lb. bar and see how much you can do. use proper form-do not cheat!
sorry to cut in , ann!

No problem!
The weight has to be heavy enough for you to totally exhaust the muscle. You shouldn't do 10 reps and then stop if you think you can do more. Like Christine said, start with 10 lbs for biceps and go up or down from there. Keeping a little notebook with you and writing down how much weight you lifted for each exercise will help you remember for the next time you come to the gym (you should gradually increase the weight as you get stronger).
