As for insurance......

When do you contact your insurance company to let them know you're pregnant? I haven't gone for my first visit yet and was wondering if I should call before I go.

TIA

I never contacted my insurance co to let them know Im pregnant. My docs office does all the precertifications for the hospital for me so I dont have to worry about it.

I havent contacted them yet, I am 21 weeks right now...
But I was also wondering the same question as you, when are we supposed to contact them.
I am not sure where you are delivering, but I got a folder from my doctor about winthrop hospital this is what it says:

'as a courtesy, winthrop will bill your insurance company on your behalf. Therefore, it is very important that you call your insurance company, inform them that you are pregnant, and verify your maternity and well-baby benefits.... you also want to enroll your baby on your insurance plan... In order to add your newborn to your insurance policy, most employers and insurers require a phone call or a form to be completed. Insurance companies usually have a cut off time for the enrollment, so you do not want to delay this process.'

Same here.
I did place a coutesy call closer, about a month before due date to make sure everything was in place and they said the Dr's office already took care of everything.

I called after my first doc appointment because my plan has a 'specialized maternity program' that you have to call and join. Simply put, they monitor your progress with trimester phone interviews and as an incentive to join I was only responsible for 10% rather than the normal 20% on my PPO. I have First Health insurance. I guess they figure if they check up on you to make sure you are attending appointments, taking vitamins it lessens the chances of complications and costs them less money.
