I have a gift for my advisor/professor. I wanted to give it to her at the graduation, but she wasn't there because she was sick. I still need to ask for a letter of recommendation but I feel weird now asking so close to giving her a gift. Does it matter? How long after I give her a thank you gift should I ask?

Re: Asking a Professor for a letter of recommendation
Depends when your application deadline is? If it isnt until May or June then wait a month and then send her the letter requesting the recommendation.

Re: Asking a Professor for a letter of recommendation
Honestly, the earlier the better for the prof. He/She might have a lot going on once the new semester starts and may have some more time right now over the break to write it and get it out of the way. I do this all the time and this is what I've found works best!

Just give her the gift and thank her for teaching you and ask if she can write you a letter. I don't think it's a big deal at all if you give her a gift when you ask her since it's the holidays.
