Barb, i totally agree! thats why yesterday (oh man this is so ) we found a kitchen table on a side walk and we really needed one so we took it. yup I am a FREEGAN

seriously tho, I agree with the WANTS against NEEDS approach. def save a lot like that.

Please girl, do not feel , at all! you do what you have to do! I was the Pier 1 queen until I decided on a full wedding and realized how much money I've been wasting on things I really don't need. Walmart works just fine for me and is certainly more economical! Until I hit the lottery, I guess I'll be with you!

oh.. and another thing..DEBT.. theres no such thing as savings when u have debt. pay that shyt off ASAPPPPPPPPPPPPPP

b4 u even LOOK to byu property, if u have debt. take all ur wedding money and PAY IT OFF!!!!!!!!!!!

maybe this is the accountant in me, but some debt is good debt....like car debt, is fine, it doesn't really go against you and it doesn't hurt your credit score. on the other hand CREDIT CARD DEBT IS EVIL....pay that off right away. Its good to have some debt bc it does build your credit history, there is such a thing as good debt and bad debt.

i have said for the longest time that i also think renting is pointless because its money out the window. however i have learned that you have to take one step at a time.

my cousins & her husband got married in 2006, purchased a co-op a couple of months before their wedding. they both make more money then my entire family combined. they just closed on a house yesterday. & they needed my aunt to co-sign the loan. they spend their money on the newest fashions, eating out to dinner, going for drinks all the time & going on vacations.

my new thing is that i would rather live in a cardboard box over a mansion any day, as long as i live with FH.

financier in me agrees completely.
thats why from having a 1/2 of the wedding in savings we went to having like almost nothing.
best decision in the world.
school loans, is that a good debt? I always wonder about that

i don't know if student loans are considered 'good' but definitely not bad, i think its just overlooked, the response I always get is 'well everyone has them'

I was too for a very looooong time. Thankfully I FINALLY paid it all off in the beginning of 2009.

I completely stay away from using CCs now (unless I know I can pay off the entire balance when my statement comes)...I seriously hate them!!!

and to stem off of this.....don't buy a house for the sake of buying one bc you think renting is a waste. take your time and do all the research. FH & I looked at homes for about a year b4 finding our home. We had an offer in on a house that was about $50k over our budget, but we figured we would make it work....boy am i glad we didn't get that house bc we would be living in the dark without any water!

Re: asking a questoin you may not want to answr

school debt does not affect your consumer credit history..its not frwoend upon..

i have abt 60K in school debt and we were able to purchase a home... we save a LOT..I am the coupon queen, I bring lunch 4 out of 5 days a week, buy at walmart, cut off an expensive gym, no clothes shopping, all of our $ is distributed evenly...

- joint savings
- bills
- personal savings *** VERY important..i encourage ALL of you to have your own personal stash.....****
- everyday $ coffee, transportation, happy hr, etc

ok.. i realllllllllllllyyy dont want to sound mean, ignorant, snotty, etc etc..cuz i honestly dont really know much.. so please dont hate me

but debt means u OWE somebody money..

how could u have savings, if youre -40k, -60k??

dont u pay an interest? it may not be 'frowned' upon.. but the DEBT keeps getting higher the longer u take to pay it off.

why would u go on and add MORE debt?

isnt it in your best interest to pay off that debt, b4 u go out and purchase a home?

i guess in theory it would make sense to pay off your student loans before adding more debt with a house....but its not realistic.

i owe 100k in student loans and that will take me a long time to pay off (like 25 years probably)....i wish i had 100 k to just pay it all back now.

So i will be getting a house in the next year or two and making payments towards paying both school loans and mortage payments

I agree with you, Barb. My grandmother allowed me to live with her for a year and a half after I returned from Japan to pay off all of my school debt. Granted I was very lucky. I went to CUNY. My bachelor's degree was paid for by my scholarship, so I only had to pay for my master's degree. But, it was still not easy. In the end, however, SO worth it. FH and I are now debt free! Good feeling.

Edited to say that if you have massive school loans, then I'd suggest finding the lowest interest rate possible!

ITA...In the perfect world I think that it is def better to pay off your loans before buying a house..but it's not realistic for a lot of people. Unless you want to just rent for 15-20 years until your school loans are paid off. FH and are are going to be paying back school loans and a mortgage at the same time (when we eventually buy a house after we're married). We def won't have our school loans paid off for at least 10-15 years..and we don't want to just be renting when we have a family...we would like to be homeowners at that time.

Re: asking a questoin you may not want to answr

in my case, there was no way i could wait and pay my loans and rent????
we chose to buy the home first. we saved for a downpayment, closing costs, and furniture...
IMO its the best thing we did...
my loans are consolidated @ 2% and it has helped in my career...

after the wedding, a huge chunk of our gift $ will go towards paying my loans... I'm hoping to be rid of them in the nxt 5 years.
