Asking bridesmaids

Asking bridesmaids

I know that, really, you can ask your friends/family to be your bridesmaids whenever you want, but what does etiquette say is the proper time? I would like to ask a few people to be my bridesmaids, but I feel it's too soon. I've heard too many horror stories of girls asking bridesmaids too soon, and then they lost touch or other drama happened as the wedding got closer.

I am wondering what etiquette says on how much time before my wedding I need to ask them.

Well, you gotta think of a few things. First dresses... you need enough time to pick them out, have them try them on and order them. I ordered mine 5 months out, so you'll probably not want to wait any longer than 7 months before to ask. Plus, if they need to travel, thats an additional cost, so you want to give them enough heads up so they can save, OOT'ers usually have an extra night hotel stay on top of all the other expenses.

I asked my girls very early, but I knew I wouldn't have an issue with them (3 close friends), the only problem I had was FSIL who ended up dropping out but that really didn't cause a problem. Some girls have had a problem asking too far in advance because relationships change over time.
