First let me say I know it's frowned upon to ask for money. The issue is I DONT need or want for any household items. I've been buying household items for 5 years now. I have everything I need or want. I don't think it's right for people to buy me more of what I have meanwhile I don't even have space for the items I already have. Thanks to macys, target, and bed bath and beyond I HAVE EVERYTHING I WANT. Martha Stewart practically lives in my house lol. I really think I should say monetary gifts strongly preferred. Ideas anyone?

Asking for money instead of GIFT
I'm not sure if your bridal shower invites went out yet, but have you thought of doing a Jack and Jill shower? So maybe you can get gifts that aren't necessarily house related or they are, but it's a little different.
Or, do like someone else I know did for their bridal shower. They included a poem about the couple's journey and then advised them in a way to get them gift cards to bed bath and beyond or home depot.
Or you can set up a Honeyfund for your honeymoon and travel expenses.
This site has some neat ideas: http://www.giftypedia.com/Tips_for_Planning_a_Jack_and_Jill_Bridal_Shower

I would try to do a honeymoon registry or furniture registry (I know raymour and Flanagan does it). Asking for money is tacky, IMO.

I had the same problem and thought it was somewhat rude to just ask for money. I just simply did not register and put nothing on the invite. Close friends and family know our situation and we have left it up to people to figure out what the lack of registering means. We will turn nothing down of course but I'm sure word of mouth will do the trick. That way, we aren't the ones saying it, it is just being assumed. My shower is next weekend so I will let you know how that thought turns out :)

So glad this post was started. i was just debating the same thing with one of my bridesmaids about the monetary gifts only thing. I really don't think it's tacky, but would like to find a better of handling this issue. I'm in the same boat as Gihane. Everything she said is the very same thing that i'm dealing with. My gargage is still full with boxes of stuff that we don't have room to put in our home. Am i interested in the honeymoon registry can someone tell me how you set that up?

You could set it up through a site called honeyfund or something similar. We are doing our honeymoon registry through our travel agent (Melissa from Trip Guy - shes great BTW and a 2014 LIW bride) and there are no fees attached to her honeymoon registry

You know, maybe one day soon showers will just go by the wayside since most people seem to have everything they need by they time they get married. I can't imagine going to a shower and just showing up with an envelope of cash, or nothing at all because I've donated to some kind of registry. If there are no gifts to give, then I don't see the point of a shower. A shower was meant to start people out with the basic things they needed for a household.

Agreed!
But are you talking about for the wedding or for the shower? The PP said it perfectly....the whole point of a shower is for you to receive gifts to set up your home. Personally, seems pretty gift grabby to me, which is why I didn't have one.
If it's for the wedding, then I agree that it's super tacky to ask for cash. I think everyone knows that people prefer cash, but for whatever reason, some still give gifts.
I think that if you don't have a registry, or you have a small one, it sends the message that you don't need a lot of things and that you prefer cash.

If you do not need home things you could also look to other places to do a registry - or use a site like myregistry where you can combine a bunch of different places.
Then you could register for things from like etsy, home depot, amazon etc. Then you are not necessarily limited to the traditional registry items

We had to do our shower early due to timing issues with out of town guest. Actually since we got engaged and are getting married within the same year, we combined the parties and are doing a bridal shower/ engagement party. So many of my friends and family are out of town that I didn't want a bridal shower but everyone here insisted so I am doing it but this works best for us. I really like the idea of a jack and jill party anyway. However the number of those attending is getting rather high. We are at 52 adults and three children with some that still have no RSVPed so I'm a little nervous that our clubhouse might be a little tight for everyone. Oh well, party on... :)

I'm not registered yet, and my sister is throwing my shower. I have a lot of stuff already but none of it is my own, as I inherited a house full of stuff from my parents. I'm going to register for basic things like sheets and towels and pots and pans, knives, etc. I know people get excited to register but I'm kind of not because I feel grabby! I have been to more showers than I can count over the course of my life and never thought anything of them so I am not sure why I feel weirded out by mine, but I do.
Some people have suggested a honeymoon registry to me and I've answered by saying, 'If we need help paying for a honeymoon, we either have no business going on one, or even throwing this wedding.'

I agree if you don't need household items go for a honeymoon registry, Home Depot/Loews home repair registry, stuff like that. My fiancés cousin is getting married next month. They have said gifts are not expected but that they would prefer opera or art related gifts. It was a nice way for them to ask for what they want and don't want.

Asking for money instead of GIFT
We have been living in our apartment for 4 years now and all the stuff belong to my uncle (he had died in 9/11) and I always loved his place. So needless to say we never really had to buy anything except a coffee machine really. I also used to work at William Sonoma (for 5 years) so over the course of that time I kinda bought a lot of stuff that my mom was collecting for a time when I got married so I too really don't need much. I am however going to register for a couple small items that the FH wanted like a deep fryer, a convection oven and some towels since we are in the process of renovating the space... I'm strictly registering for what I need otherwise I am letting guests decide on their own what to get me. When I first heard about the honeymoon registries I was horrified that people would do something like that I went around saying 'that's the couples decision to take a vacation after they get married why would I contribute?' but now I get it: I would absolutely NEVER help with paying for the actual honeymoon but I think the idea of paying for a romantic meal for them on the beach or in the mountains is effing cool! I could be like hey, this meals on me - get naked and eat good food! Or I can pay for a couples massage on the water... those things are pretty awesome gifts and USEFUL!! I am always into a gift someone can make use out of. I would suggest you NOT ask people or even suggest the idea of giving you money because people will not be thrilled with you. Come up with a small registry 20 items or less and if people tell you that there isn't much to choose from just be honest and tell them you registered for a couple things you wanted because you already have bought everything you need. Tell them to surprise you with something of their choice.

Asking for money instead of GIFT
Everyone's situation is different. We chose to have the wedding of our dreams after years of being together we decided to do our way. I don't have any regrets. We spent what we did and live our lives the way we want. We're just saying we have enough things so now we want to have a registry fit something else. Personally were gonna tell our family we prefer money and for friends well tell them about the registry. Why give someone something they don't really want or need for that matter; whereas, you can help them to get what they REALLY WANT. We chose to have and invite people to the most important day of our lives, plus they are bringing a guest. I would like to think people would want to enjoy our days with us and give us the gift we want. Personally speaking these are the same people who love to give their input about our lives so here's there chance to put their money up to help us reach their goals for us.

If this is for the wedding proper etiquette would say Money is the gift most people choose but if this is for the Bridal Shower I personally wouldn't tell anyone what I prefer even if it is money. I mean if you think about I don't think there is anyone who would turn down money but outright ask people for money at the shower and then they give money as a gift at the wedding your going to have a lot of people who probably wont bother to give you a wedding gift at all if you want money at your shower, just an FYI - I personally family or not would never give money at a shower and then money at a wedding. Money is traditional for the wedding day. Technically, also speaking while all of this gift giving is proper etiquette there is NO rule actually telling people they have to give a gift at all. You invited these people to your wedding but not everyone gives a gift. Every wedding I have ever been there's been at least 5 people who assume 'we were invited and we put aside this day for the couple' that doesn't automatically require a gift. Some people feel you invited them to share in your happiness not for your personal gain so my two cents is to tred lightly when asking for money- some people could view this terribly wrong. ** side note im just stating my opinion you don't obviously have to listen to anything

A gift is a gift that comes from someone regardless of whether the other person asked for it or not. Even traditional shower registries are just meant to be suggestions. I agree with the above poster - I don't think you should make it 'known' that you would prefer money. Personally speaking, if someone told me they were having a bridal shower but didn't want actual presents, just money, I wouldn't go. Most people expect a shower to be a party where the bride (and now sometimes grooms too!) opens gifts that were given to her by her close family and friends to start off her married life with.
People will be giving money at the wedding. To expect them to give money at a shower will probably offend a lot them and cause more headaches when all is said and done.
