So I was reading one of my bridal blogs that I frequent and they featured a disaster cake story...what cake did the bride want...THE FLIPPIN CAKE I GAVE MY CAKE DESIGNER!
I had a minor coronary this morning!!
This is what the bride wrote:
In order to achieve this look, I purchased a mold from Decorate the Cake and brought it to our baker. She seemed pretty confident that she could pull it off. She even tested a bit while I waited to see how it would turn out. She planned to use the mold to create the design on each layer by removing sections. Hopefully, this would create a new design on each layer. It didn't turn out exactly as I was hoping. The layers were quite thick, far from the delicate lace I was hoping for. I didn't actually realize how poorly this was executed until just this moment, comparing the photos.
Our cake was absolutely saved by our cake topper.
See cakes attached
The first one is my lovely baby...lol The second is the hideous creation that a baker actually delivered to this poor girls wedding...
I just wrote a frantic email to my cake lady...which I am sure she is gonna roll her eyes at my bridezilla moment but I need to know if this sucker will be hard to make....I would rather pick something else than be disappointed...
Re: @#$$$...Like I need to revisit the Cake Stress
The first cake is beautiful! I also think the second one wasn't horrible...well, not a big fan of the topper but that's not my style....
I'm sure your baker will do fine!

It might be the pic but the 2nd is horrible, also the fact your baker didn't ask for a mold seems like a a good sign. I think it was prob the other girls baker did not know that style and yours will prob exectute it fine. It is a gorgous cake!

i'm sure it will be fine!!! it has more to do with the person who decorated the cake. if you have seen things that your cake lady has done, and are confident in their skills you should be fine!! my sister makes cakes so i totally know that it is ALL about the person creating it. its one thing to look at a design and mimic it with a mold, its completely different to know how to make it without one!!!
don't worry!!!

Re: @#$$$...Like I need to revisit the Cake Stress
i will admit that ive seem MANY bakers who say 'oh no problem, i can recreate that cake' then you see the cake they tried recreating and its a disaster. Did you see past work of the baker you are using? if so then go by that. I knew the design i wanted wasnt an easy one so i didnt want to go to anybody who says to me that they can do it, i wanted to see that they have done it and done it well.

yes..i have seen the work and it is beautiful...but the cake i want is soooooo simple..there is not a lot of room for error...it has to be flawless for it to have the impact...
it was just a shock to read that post this morning and see how wrong it can go...

First, I'll bet you anything that the top cake isn't even a cake, it's styrofoam. Cake layers are never that perfect.
Second, if you have to buy pans for your baker, something is wrong.
Third, why would you use a mold when you can get a patterned fondant cutter?
Relax. It'll be fine.

ive seen many cake layers that are perfect and real. I think a very good baker can make it perfect, some do rush it and dont do a great job

I would change it ... looks like the second one didnt come out AT ALL like the first one ... I dont know, I would be reall upset if i wanted the first one and I got the second one, IMO, I would change it to something that these cake people do more often and know they wont disapoint you

Re: @#$$$...Like I need to revisit the Cake Stress
I'm confused because she said she bought a mold to create the design... a good baker would be able to free hand that design in buttercream or royal icing on the cake. As long as you've seen good piping work done by your baker I wouldn't panic.
