Yeah, but I honestly never expected to find a guy who was ok with my controversial point of view on religion.
During our second year together I took him to San Antonio to meet my extended family and friends. I got into this uhmmm 'discussion' with the man who fathered my god son. It started innocently enough over dinner but soon went all the way through dessert and into the car. My best friend (mom of my dear god son & MOH) put in her two cents from time to time (She is devoutly religious) and so did Jim. I stayed true and honest but tried not to hurt anyone's feelings.
Later that night Jim actually took me aside and said 'You know, I learned something tonight. I know you talk about this stuff all the time, but I think I finally got it. I understand why you think the way you and it's amazing! I didn't realize I was so conditioned to think only one way.' I have NEVER had anyone say that to me and I felt so good about freeing him from the constrains of what little was left holding him to his religious training.
He used to think he was non-religious before, now he thinks differently. He and I still get into lengthy philisophical discussions and it's GREAT!
Im just in awe i guess.. thank god I married him! LOL

wow...thats pretty impressive...religion is something you rarely can change in someone...
that was probably one thing that made me so interested in John the first night we met...we had a lengthy philosophical discussion...and agreed on everything...that and he had a cute butt

Re: Atheists/Agnostics - dealing with the holidays
Being raised Catholic and having taught in Catholic schools, I respect and uphold the spirit of Christmas. We do the tree, lights, star, and nativity as well. My FH is Italian so Christmas Eve is very big in his house. Big Italian meal and gift exchanging followed by Midnight Mass. I have been surrounded by wonderful friends that are also Catholic and enjoy celebrating various aspects of the season. We also have a growing group of Jewish friends and have most enjoyed the celebrations around the Menorah. Finally, we are very good friends with an African American couple that celebrates Kwanzaa. We have learned so much about the seven principles and take part in their celebrations as well.
When and if we ever have children they will be raised as practicing Catholics (however, that doesn't mean that I support EVERY aspect of the church's beliefs) However, if my child wanted to 'change' their religion I would be open to it if that would make them more of a spiritual person.
Religion is important to me. I have great faith in what I believe and feel comfortable enough sharing in the celebrations of others. I have a friend who grew up without any formal religion(parents were an interfaith Irish couple) and she always felt lost. She felt that she missed out on things that her cousins were experiencing. After many years of study she 'converted' to Catholicism. She is now raising her children as Catholics and enjoys being part of her local parish.
My wish for you all is that you have a safe, happy, & healthy holiday/winter season!
