Attn: Church Brides

How many of you are concerned with attending mass in order to be able to have your wedding in the church?

I am booked for my brothers parish which I consequently had to become a member of in order to be married there and now I feel like I have to start attending mass in order to not 'get in trouble'.

Anyone else dealing with this?

Do they actually look at the names on the envelops and take attendance?

Confirmation is no longer a requirement to be married I never made mine and they said it is not a requirement however is it strongly suggested. I told them I would not be making mine and when they asked why I told them it was a personal preference and that was that I do not need to make my confirmation

My Deacon was definitely adamant about us going to church.

EVERY CHURCH IS DIFFERENT... BUT SOME CHURCHES TAKE THE STAND THAT IF IT IS SO IMPORTANT FOR YOU TO GET MARRIED IN A CHURCH THEN WHY IS IT ANY DIFFERENT WHEN IT COMES TO WEEKLY ATTENDANCE...

I WORKED FOR A RECTORY IN HIGH SCHOOL SO I HAVE HEARD THIS OFTEN...I COULD NEVER REALLY ARGUE THE POINT

Its true. But the thing is that its important to our families that we get married in the church..not to FH and I ... but I cant very well tell the Deacon that

If you go, be sure to register. I'm pretty sure this is how they know if you are a member. When I go, I usually just put $ in, don't use those envelopes anyway.

I think it depends on the church/priest. We have such a relaxed priest marrying us, he isnt making us pay the extra fee for non-parishioners, he just marked us as parishioners. He never talks to us about going to mass on Sundays, he said he understands that not all people can make it. But he is making FH do his confirmation, he will confirm him a month before our wedding.

Don't feel obligated to go to mass every sunday if you can't, there's nothing worse than forcing yourself to sit there every weekend.

We try to go when we can and they seem to be fine with that. My FH is Catholic, I'm not, so he goes more then me. But the priest knows that his family is in NJ (and his father is sick) so they understand were often missing on weekends.

Yea our Deacon never said we Had Too, my Mom wants us to go at least once. But FH is so anti-Church I know he won't go with me.....

2010'er crashing... we are getting married in my childhood church... my priest pretty much said: 'See you at the wedding'. FH is getting confirmed at his parish in Levittown and going to mass there, and I'd like to go more but I work Sundays... I think we'll start making a point to going to Saturday evening mass at my church.

My priest is awesome and states that once people get married, then they make the decision whether or not to become parishoners... and raise their children Catholic and a wedding is a good way to get younger people to go to church, so he expects to see more of us after the wedding

churches can vary... an 'old school' priest will DEF expect you to be at mass. the priest at my parish is really down to earth, wants us to come to mass, but on our own accord. you should go here and there. i would like to go because i dont want to feel detached from the parish.

I had to finish my sacraments... need to get confirmed before the priest would even talk to us! So now that that is done.. he looks for us at church and I know that our church tallys up the envelopes at the end of the year... so we are very diligent about keeping up with the envelopes even if we dont make it to mass... FH drops off the envelopes if need be.

i'm sorry to hear that... our church is very relaxed with that... no questions about our church regimen, or whether or not we are registered with the church... churches are very different! and i agree, we are getting married in a church because of my family and his family!! if it were up to us, we wouldn't!!!
