average amount spent on a shower gift?

Original post by summerbridetobe

Ive been working on making my registry but I am curious how much people will spend on average. I know it varies greatly (based on grandparents vs. work friends ect.) but I just wanted to get an idea of the average amount. If you have not had your shower yet, how much do you spend on average for a gift?

If I could spin off the topic just slightly, I have a lot of small ticket items on my registry. If you had a set amount you wanted to spend, would you buy 2 small items or just look for one larger one?

I like to buy items that go together, so I wouldn't be opposed to buying a few small items for someone.

I agree. For me, it all depends on what the items are. For my girlfriend's bridal shower a few months ago, I bought her all of her table linens (napkins, tablecloths), her napkin rings, and a tote bag she registered for, and made up a big 'gift' bag with all of the things. A lot of times I like to buy lots of little things and make baskets or 'kits.'

I'd figure around $100 for most people...and dont forget, a lot of people might pool their $$ together for a big gift.

I have recently change my way of thinking with giving gifts for shower, in the past i would spend over 100 - 200 and now i buy an item around 50 - 65 and make a point to give much more more as the wedding gift.

I agree with everyone else...It really depends on how close you are to the person and how much you can afford...One of my classmates from college was getting married while we were still in school and I couldnt afford much AND I didnt really know her that well, so I spent $50 on her gift.
But if that was anyone in my immediate family I would spend upwards of $200 for them. If it was for FH's family (I am not close at all to any of them) I would spend $50-$75 based upon where the shower is being held (Pizza place, $50, catering hall, $75)
