A friend of FH asked if he and his wife can bring there newborn baby to our wedding. She is due one month before the wedding. I am not too thrilled about it b/c i just don't think it's appropriate.
What should I do without being rude?

Re: Baby at the reception????
FSIL and FBIL are expecting their first baby one month before our wedding. Bringing the baby is OUT OF THE QUESTION and I have no problem telling anyone so. It is most certainly not a place for a newborn (germs etc.) and not only that, it's supposed to be your big day, not the unveiling of someones new baby. I dont mean to sound so harsh but this is actually something I've been worrying about too since they announced their pregnancy (kinda struck a sore spot for me ). As of now they mentioned that her parents will watch the baby the day and night of but I'm worried that once the baby is here, they may ask if its ok and have some excuse ready about not being 'ready' to be apart. I would simply tell them that you dont think it's a very good idea, because of all the people and exposure. HTH

Hi, Sally!! Debi is trying a few things, like putting Adults only, on the RSVP's, and if need be, try to explain how the event wouldn't be a good idea for the child. Those are starters. Mary MOB

Ok i really dont understand how somebody wants to bring their new born its a baby, it shouldn't be out at a wedding...Its so noisey, the baby sleeps most of the time, it shouldn't be disturbed so much...its just not right.

Thanks for the advice! I'm glad i'm not the only one who feels that way. I just don't think I would want to bring my newborn to a wedding. I know it's difficult, but don't parents look foward to a night out without the kids?

Re: Baby at the reception????
I like the idea of telling them that unfortunately you have to say no because if you say yes to them then all the other parents would want to bring their kids and there's just not enough room or money in the budget to make accommodations for the kids.
Also, I'd start to scare them about bringing a newborn there (haha I know, so mean). But you can say stuff to them like 'oh you'd want to bring your baby to a wedding where there will be all these people there that carry germs?' 'What about the fact that the baby hasn't had their shots yet? They'd be so much more susceptible to catching something.' 'Oh so many people are probably going to come up to you and ask to hold the baby after they've been drinking all night!!! Aren't you worried?' Again, I know it's mean, but it's just something you can say innocently to maybe make the parents realize that it's not such a good idea to bring the baby. HAHAHA!

I'm also worried b/c i've never met them...they live OOT. I don't want them to get a bad first impression of me. FH is going to have to handle this one!

Usually a baby gets his/her shots around 3 months. You can take them out before, but you really don't want to be parading them all around town.
I don't know why I just thought of this, but it reminded me of Sweet Home Alabama when her friend has a baby in the bar, and she says 'You have a baby ... in a bar!' If they bring the baby to the wedding, someone should say to them 'You have a baby ... at a wedding!' Haha.

Re: Baby at the reception????
I had this situation for my wedding. A cousin that I'm not close with but whom I did invite to the wedding with his wife that I've never met apparently was upset that his newborn baby and 2 year old weren't invited. The baby was born a few weeks before the wedding and I could not for the life of me understand why he wanted to bring her to a Friday night wedding that STARTED at 8:30pm and ended at 1:30am - a baby that hasn't had her shots - and a wedding where the music would be crazy loud etc. I told my grandmother that I couldn't understand why he even wanted to bring the newborn, what kind of parent doesn't think about all these things, and I didn't 'back down' - he didn't come to the wedding, but I didn't think he wanted to come anyway since he had his wedding a couple of years ago and didn't invite me or my parents. Oh well. I still don't think a 1 month old should be taken to a reception hall, late at night, etc etc. But that's just my opinion.

Honestly...I haven't read any of the other responses to this thread. But I am going through this.
FH's 4th cousin is due 7 weeks before the wedding and his 3rd cousin (the pregnant woman's mother' came up to me on Christmas with a pic of the sonogram and said 'Aren't you so excited that this baby will be at your wedding?' I came right out and said, 'Well, no it won't. There will only be one child at the wedding.' That will be FH's nephew, we call him the junior best man. She didn't like it but I made my point clear. I personally don't think a 7 week old belongs at a Friday night wedding where people will be drinking. JMO.
If you don't want the child there. Let it be known now.

Re: Baby at the reception????
I would just nicely say that you would love to have the baby there but you worry that it's not the right place for a small child- they might cry during the ceremoney, etc...
FH's friend (who is in the bridal party) just mentioned to me that him and his wife are bringing their baby (who will be 2 months at that point).... Just as I was about to cry, she corrected herself and said that it would only be to the rehearsal dinner (if I didn't mind??!!) They are coming out east to the place the day before for the rehearsal dinner and staying there for 2 days. So I am ok with her bringing baby to the rehearsal dinner but if she were to then ask to have the baby at the wedding, I think I'd have to grow some ....... and say something. It's your wedding and you should be able to have it exactly as you want!

Im in the same boat!!! FSIL and FBIL are expecting at the beginning of Feb and our wedding is in May and she is a bridesmaid and he is a groomsman!!! I couldnt believe they told me they were DEFINITELY bringing her! So, I was like, well what if she starts crying in the middle of the ceremony, and who will watch her when everyone is dancing and drinking! How will she sleep with blaring music!!! ARGH!

Re: Baby at the reception????
At least they asked----some people would just show u w/ the baby (which is so freakin' rude!).
For me, personally, if it was a close family member or close friend I wouldn't have a problem w/ a baby or small child. Friends really shouldn't bring their babies and kids----we told them that our wedding will be a great chance for a date night w/out the kids. We are very close w/ the daughter of one friend so we are inviting her.
I agree w/ the others that it's strange that they would even want to bring their newborn out in public. Hopefully your Fh can be delicate in saying no.

Re: Baby at the reception????
A friend of mine had a baby about two months before we had a wedding to go to. She asked our mutual friend if she could bring the baby and the mutual friend said it was fine.
Can i just tell you, what a disaster. She thought she would feed the baby and it would sleep. Yeah, um babys cant sleep when there is a band blasting music. The baby kept crying , she had to keep leaving and feeding it and ran out of milk and had to leave early. I realize parents dont like to leave their newborns, but its kinda selfish to bring them, its not a conducive environment for babies.
I dont understand why parents want to do that to their kids?

Re: Baby at the reception????
NO kids at all at the reception for us...
I had this similar situation last week.... one of my BM's sister just had a baby and lives in FL and is coming up for our wedding. She said 'so excited to come to your wedding & I'll make sure to bring lots of toys for Jacob (the baby)'. I wrote back and played dumb and said 'oh- are you leaving Jacob with your parents and you and Doug coming to LI for the wedding'. She wrote back that they would 'figure it out' and yes, her and Doug would be coming down....

Re: Baby at the reception????
Weddings are not the place for babies. Once you allow one baby then you can be sure other guests will want to bring their kids. I don't think it's rude at all to say you don't want children at your wedding. It's an adult affair. I would tell them that you are having an adult reception and no one is bringing their children and you can make no exception for them because then everyone will want to bring their kids, and if they don't understand that then too bad....I agree with above posts...why would someone want to bring a baby? Aren't you not allowed to bring a newborn in public places for a while???
