'baby blues'

'baby blues'

Although I am thrilled with my beautiful 2 week old son, sometimes I feel totally down in the dumps. I was wondering if anyone else has gone through this postpartum, how they felt and how long it lasted.
Sometimes I feel like I could cry for days...
Any info would help.
Thanks.

Aaaw, sweetie ... this is so normal. This happened to my sisters also. You'll feel better soon. You're just physically and emotionally drained. Try to smile.

I cried on and off for the first two weeks almost every day. Sometimes it had to do with difficulties in breastfeeding, other times there was no great reason, I would just start crying. It gets so much better as the days go by, I hope you feel the same. My son is now a month old and I have not shed any tears in a few weeks!

I know exactly how you feel. I am crazy about my daughter. I love her so much, but it the beginning was tough. Emily is six weeks old now and I'd say I started to feel human about a week and a half ago. I was so bad the second week with crying and what not that my mom took off from work and helped me out soooo much with her. She let me sleep. She watched her while I got a hair cut. She organized all the gifts I was receiving. I was so overwhelmed. Even after the week was up, she'd come over after work and help me get Emily to sleep. I couldn't stand to hear her cry. I didn't know what to do for her. I'd cry with her. Emily was and still is fussy. She has gas problems. She was born with an underdeveloped sphincter(sp) muscle. She was in a lot of pain. She didn't know how to go to the bathroom. She cried ALOT! She has gotten a lot better. I have to give her about one oz. of prune juice a day. That helps a lot. It makes her go easier. People keep telling me to hang in there. I am now starting to believe them. It does get better. You're not alone even though you might feel that way.

I cant say how long it will last but I went through it with both my kids. I can absolutely positively promise you that the difficulty of adjusting to parenthood will pass. If you feel like it's not, please talk to your doctor about it.

Plus (a big plus) your hormones are still awry so that will definitely have you feeling the blues and explains the crying, add in broken sleep and all the 'newness' of it, anyone is bound to feel a blue.

Hang in there, please keep us updated on how you are feeling.

You can love your child and have PPD or 'baby blues'. One has really nothing to do with the other. Baby Blues are very common due to the immediate hormone drop when your placenta is delivered. If it lasts more than a 2-3 weeks OR you are having severe crying for hours, severe mood swings, feelings of sucide (I am NOT saying you are feeling this but you never know who else will read this), hear voices/not sure what is reality, overwhelming saddness that you cannot control at all, or are unable to care for your baby call your doctor ASAP. There is NOTHING to be ashamed of, no matter what the degree you are feeling these emotions. Marie Osmond, Brooke Shields are 2 famous moms who have had very bad PPD. Marie Osmond actually had a near complete breakdown. Brooke Shields is writing a book about her PPD experience.

I felt this way too - I cried non-stop for the first few days at home - it was horrible. I loved my son, but I felt so overwhelmed. Some of it was due to breastfeeding frustration, but some of it was for no real reason that I could pinpoint. After the first few days, my crying spells decreased and only happened in the early evening for some reason...this just recently stopped. Now I feel good most of the time, but occasionaly I will cry for no reason. Thank God for my husband - he always makes me feel so much better. You will get over it eventually...if it is still happening in a few weeks and seems pretty bad, please talk to your dr. - they can help!

Re: 'baby blues'

Hi, I was just browsing this board and saw this post.

My mom and grandma had PPD. They felt so alone and sad. My mom said it helped to talk about it. She is a nurse, and like Michele31, she says it is a VERY COMMON condition. There is nothing to be ashamed of. I hope you feel better soon. Take it easy on yourself, and let those close to you know how you are feeling so you can rest. And make sure you are eating.
