I have not babysat in a long time BUT I need money. One of my neighbors asked me if I would be interested in babysitting sometime and I said yes. She asked me what my rate was and I had no idea what to say.
What do you think an appropriate rate would be???

Re: Babysitting...
Ask a 15 year old and then tack on $5. Your time is worth more and you drive.

Re: Babysitting...
That's so tough to figure out - 10 years ago I would have charged around $10 an hour for that but now - I feel like that's not nearly enough for three kids!

Inflation happened? I seriously don't know what's right, I'm really just guessing. It's totally different hiring a kid; they'll accept less because they don't have rent, food and a wedding to pay for

Re: Babysitting...
I babysit every once in a while for a good family friend, I've been doing it for years and I feel bad saying no b/c they don't ask me often. But there are 3 kids and they go to sleep after an hour that i'm there and i watch TV the rest of the time. They give me 15. an hour it's cash $. I would feel funny asking more then 15, but that is just me.

I still babysit in my neighborhood, its quick and easy money. I usually get between 10-12 dollars an hour I think thats fair.

Re: Babysitting...
$20 is good, you'll probabaly only get like $10-15, because people don't like to pay. Thje truth is (IMO) your children are the most valuable thing you have, people never want to pay the people who come into their homes, the people who clean their houses and don't steal from them, the people who watch their children and play w/ them instead of watching TV, the people who take care of their elderly mother.... I babysit and people always argue about how much they should pay them. You give the pizza guy 5 bucks for bringing a pizza to your door. FH installs home theaters and he could be at someones house for a hour and they'll give him $50 as a tip, but GOD FORBID you over pay the person that watches your child!! Sorry.... I just had to get that out!

Re: Babysitting...
i get $10 for 1 kid...i think for 3 i would do $15, but if its a night job and they are all sleeping anyway, $15 might be to steep. i work at a daycare center and a lot of us babysit for the kids and it seems $10 is the going rate. ~lacey
