I hope it isn't the worst news (break-up). That is devastating. However, if you are really good friends, I wouldn't call her at work and ask her what happened. But maybe be at her place as soon as she gets home or meet somewhere kind of private so if she is upset, she won't be embarassed to cry or open up.
Say that you were just on FB and saw it. As you know...if you are on FB and do something it goes to your friends' newsfeed. So, if she knows you were on and didn't mention it, will she be offended? I don't know your friendship, but I would call my girls up right away or drive to their house and just look into their eyes and know. I would hug them and let them cry or just vent. Make coffee or bring some of their fave things. But mostly, just be there and be prepared to lift her spirits.

Re: bad feeling (update & another question!)
Personally, I'd call right away, tell her you saw it on FB and see if she wants to get together for coffee or a drink tonight (if you can).
I know if I were to put that on FB and my friends didn't say something, I'd actually be a little taken back.

I would definitely reach out to her. Sounds to me like they are no longer engaged.

If it was me, I would call her asap to ask what happened. I wouldn't be able to wait.

Since you saw it on FB, maybe send her a message (not a wall post) on FB expressing concern. Maybe something along the lines of: I saw that your relationship status has changed. I hope that it's not what it looks like, but just know that I am here for you either way.'
That way, she knows that you are concerned and she can reach out to you when she is ready.

As someone who has called off an enagement, give her time. It is one of the most difficult decision and turns your life upside down. For me it was the best thing I could have ever done because now I am with the man of my dreams. But it is not something that is easy to talk about. I didn't tell alot of people personally I called one friend and sked her to spread the word for me. It made it easier that way. If you are that close to her and she hasn't said anything maybe it is a mistake. But I would tread lightly because if she is still engaged you don't want to give her the impression that you think she should be engaged.
