bad gift?!

dh come home from his mothers this morn and he looks upset.
I asked what happened he said no one can ever make his mother happy.
turns out she didnt like the birthday gift we gave her last week. We gave her 2 printed pics from the photographer and framed them. She said that she was disappointed and though that should have just been given to her and not as a gift.
HOW RUDE IS SHe?
i got upset and than I said I was sorry that he had to have a mother like that.
Its not like i took the pics and got them printed at cvs and cheaply framed them. That was a lot of $$ spend.
