Bad times, FH a commitment phobe!

Bad times, FH a commitment phobe!

It took 3 years but I'm realizing FH is commitment phobic. Here's the brief version - but it's still long.

We met almost 3 years ago. He was legally separated and the separation agreement would mature in 2005. Well, in that time we fell in love despite the fact I never wanted a step child, I overcame that b/c my love was so strong and my friends and family really liked him and supported me so much. The child and I love eachother very much and he's so looking forward to us getting married and him getting half sibblings. He gave me a beautiful diamond ring withing 6 months of us being together and we bought a house shortly after that. I had a cat from before him and she came along and between the 2 of us we adopted 3 more cats. So we've had a little family of sorts. We had a fight about 6 months after the initial engagement and I threw the ring at him, this hurt him and we put all bets on hold. Last 4th of July he gave me my ring back. Since then I've made a few attempts to 'plan' a wedding. He's still waiting for the actual piece of paper as far as I know - but both parties signed for the divorce after all (she gave a lot of threats that she wouldn't sign for a long time).

Anyway, the first time I tried to talk wedding, FH came to me and said 'I'm so excited, I feel like I'm getting married for the first time'. I was so elated! About 2 weeks later we decided to get some ideas and went to the Vineyard Caterers to check out their wedding info. My p's live in Suffolk so we took them along. When we went back to their house afterward, FH had a horrible nose bleed! I mean gushing! He continued to get them over the next several days. Then he told me that due to his job loss at the time, it was too much stress to think about a wedding when we're struggling with the mortgage and other expenses.

January 2005 he got a job (I lost mine however) and signed off on the final divorce papers... I started dabbling in wedding ideas again. We had a fight about it - I threatened to leave for my p's house and he suggested I stay with a friend (would have been MOH). My friend was pregnant at the time and they can't host me there. I returned home that night and FH was crying that he didn't want to be without me. I said 'fine, you said in the beginning that in March you'd be divorced, April 1st either s**t or get off the pot. He giggled and agreed.

As 4/1 approached he told me that we'd go upstate for a weekend at Villa Roma and we'd talk about our wedding plans. Well, we went it cost more than we can afford due to his huge pay cut and my being out of work. All so that at dinner he could tell me that he wants us to be more financially stable before getting married and that I need to get a job and that I need to be nicer to his family (they are very hard people to get along with and are obsessed with his ex troubles - being that I started to lose faith in us really ever getting married I started to pull away). I said fine, but I want a date. He said that he's trying to get a promotion that he should know about in June so we'll set the date over the summer.

So here's June, his company loves him, but their not making any promo decisions right now. So, he takes a trip to Maine every 4th of July. This year his son is going. I, due to an unemployment hearing that I may have scheduled during that time, may only be able to go for the weekend, he's going for 7 days. So we decided that after Maine we'll set a wedding date.

FH has not been sleeping the last few nights and I've noticed him becoming emotionally distant. I asked him what's on his mind, he initially said he wasn't sure. I asked about work and us and he said all are fine, he just feels overwhelmed and anxious about something. I then asked if it had to do with setting a wedding date. He like lit up and said 'yeah, that may be it'. So now I'm PO'd as I'm sure you can all imagine. I told him this is a huge problem. He said he's aware. He said he loves me and wants to be with me. I asked him what is more stressful to think about setting a wedding date or breaking up? He looked at me - I said let me ask you this 'would you feel better if you didn't have the stress of a wedding' he said yes. I said then the breaking up is the answer then! He cried, I cried. It was a horrible night. I went to my p's who are very aggravated (they're obviously disappointed that he's made promises to me and his son and everyone else and now he's flaking out. They don't really want my cat - but I need her, please no one tell me to get rid of her - she's been the only constant in my life). I packed up my cat last night and stayed on a couch at my p's. It broke my heart to leave the cat he got for me behind, but I can't take her. Yet the only 2 people in this whole world she trusts is me and FH (she was badly abused). At my p's my cat is stuck in one small room. She cried the whole night, I did too. I called FH twice b/c I missed him so much. He loves me and wants us to be together. I woke up at 7am this morning... I could barely sleep the whole night. I decided to drive to our house before the traffic. FH was still sleeping when I got here and he's still sleeping now. He wanted me to take a nap with him. I tried going into our spare room to sleep (I'm so tired) but it was too bright and I wanted to be in his arms so bad. I went into our room and tried to lay with him. He held me and it felt good, but I know in my heart that I'm just going to get hurt if I keep letting him do this and that it's hard enough to muster up the courage to leave, how can I do it when I want to be in his arms so bad and it feels so good to be in his arms. I told him I love him, he responded 'I love you too', I told him I wanted to be with him he said he wanted that too. I said I wanted to get married and he said nothing. When I pushed, he said 'it's 9am, I just went to sleep 2 hours ago can we just take a nap together get a few winks - I haven't slept all week'. I tried, but couldn't relax. Everything from how much I love him, to how much this hurts, to our first kiss, the first time we held hands, to thinking about joing a dating service and how hard will it be to find someone to love again, to the fact I'm 32 and I have no single friends. I'm so overwhelmed and so sad. I know most of you probably think that if I want marriage and he doesn't that I'm probably doing the right thing no matter how emotionally and otherwise uncomfortable it is to go to my p's house. My family was great last night and they totally felt that I had to do this. He has to see what it's like without me, I've been too available and accessable. I sacrificed my desire to get married b/c of his situation, but it couldn't last, the idea was that once things were done with the divorce we'd move on. He said yesterday that he spent so long running away from his ex that he hasn't dealt with the pain and issues from the bad marriage. It's so different though... they got married only b/c she got pregnant. Oh, and he's also questioning himself as a father... he thinks he's an incompetent father and is unsure of his ability or desire to have other children b/c he doubts his ability so much. I told him that with our kids living with him and being involved in their lives it will be so different - funny enough that's exactly what he told me when we first started dating to eliviate my fears. He's the first man I ever trusted - I was 29 when we met... no my heart aches so bad and I'm so scared!

I've hit rock bottom. I'm in therapy already so that's already in place. I have no job, I have not a dime to my name yet I have credit card bills a student loan and a car payment, I'm in love with a man who loves me but can't give me what I need, I'm 32 and want to have a family. Any kind words???? What do I do to encourage him to commit? Is it too late? If so, how do I start over? How do I meet people? How do I get past the pain of losing a man that I thought was the one and was so almost perfect for me? How do I trust anyone again? How do I cope with sleeping on a couch in my p's spare room for an indefinite amount of time with my cat stuck in that one room too? HELP!

I'm not really sure what to say except Have you two talked about going to counseling together? Maybe he just has some mental roadblack form his last marriage that he needs to get over, like he';s afraid this one won;t work out either. RThen agaij his last one could ahve gone awry because of the same commitment problems Just kep your head up! I hope it all works out one way or anohter.

i'm sorry you are going through all of this but i think you really need to look into your future and decide whether or not he is ever going to be able to committ to you. take a break from him including no calls and maybe you'll open his eyes and yours if they are closed to what's really going on in your heart. take deep breaths and trust your instincts. good luck

Oh honey. I think the first thing you need to do is take a deep breath. I'm so sorry that you are going through all of this, and I know how easy it's going to be for people to tell you to just leave, but I also know how HARD IT IS when you are in a situation like that. I was with someone like that before JT, and even though I KNEW I had to leave him for various reasons, it took me a year to do it!

I think your FH has made it clear that marriage is not an option for him at this time. But before you move out, I would get YOUR life in order first. Get a job, reconnect with your friends, etc. I know it's easier said than done, but I would get yourself on stable ground before moving out, etc. Maybe if you focus more on you, and less on the relationship, you will be able to see more clearly. Maybe FH is afraid you are too dependent on him? I don't really know. I'm just so sorry you are going through this

I have to agree, i think if you really believe he won't commit you need to make a clean break until you get your life in order. We all know form experience that if you keep talking on the phone, seeing each other, etc you'll never ever break up, and youi'll never get the distance you need to work things out if that's what's meant to be either. Best of luck!

I am trying to look at both sides of this situation. I understand how you feel; that you have been with this man for three years and every time you bring up marraige he gets wierd.
But maybe look at it from his side.. he was married, and it didn't work out. Maybe its not that he is so scared to commit, but maybe he scared of the idea of marraige right now. Things are good between you (or were before this happened) and he is afraid that if you get married it will fall apart, like it did last time. I think that couples counseling, like someone else mentioned, might be a really good idea. Maybe he needs to work some stuff out about the concept of marraige, that its not always bad.
I hope everything works out for you..

Re: Bad times, FH a commitment phobe!

Thanks for all the warm thoughts. I've tried so hard to see his side and yes, it's otherwise a great relationship if you can believe that. I got off the computer for a few minutes and layed next to him, told him I love him he responded with an I love you too. I then said i want to marry you. He's half asleep and I know I'm being a pain, but my heart is being ripped out of my chest. He said 'one day'! I said I've waited for 'one day' for so long and said we need to talk later - he agreed.

Meanwhile, I'm so overwhelmed. I know this sounds stupid but I feel guilty that the cat is in a room at my p's, I'm not with her right now - waiting for our talk.

Here's the deal from my perspective. I want couples counseling too. However, even if money is too tight for the big gala affair, I want him to get that divorce decree in his sweaty palms and then i want to go to town hall and get a marriage license. We can save the next year, 2 year, 10 years I don't care and have a 'vow renewal' ceremony with all the glitz and glam I ever wanted in a wedding. I feel by the end of the summer's appropriate. Now, if he agrees - do I continue to live here or go to my p's and sleep on a couch and have my cat limited to one room for the whole summer? I know those of you who aren't big animal lovers must think I'm nuts to be thinking of the cat at this point, but it's one more thing that's upsetting me.

Thanks again for the warm thoughts. All thoughts are appreciated, I'm really really hurting with this. I agree that moving out sooner than later is best b/c it's hard to interview even for a job and know that you may end up living about an hour away if you move home with the p's, whereas if I stay I'm 5 minutes. Kind of hard to focus on what I'm supposed to do. I got my Real Estate license about a month ago but again, right now my office is 5 minutes from our house, if I stay with the p's it's about an hour!

I don't think there is anything you can do to 'encourage' him to commit to a marriage to you. As the some of the other ladies have noted, it sounds like he needs counseling (and you both might need couples counseling).

You have to ask yourself this question: Are you willing to wait until he is fully emotionally ready to commit to you, no matter how long it takes?

Mrs.Ptobe Posted:

Re: Bad times, FH a commitment phobe!

He's in counseling if you can believe that. I think he needs a new therapist - he's been in counseling since he moved out from his ex almost 8 years ago! I'm not sure he's ever going to get over it.

I'm still open to couples therapy, my sister suggested like a church or an interfaith minister b/c couples counseling especially in addition to our individual sessions can get VERY expensive. Now I need him to agree and commit to that!

Can I wait for him? Well, I guess that's what I'm struggling with. I don't know that he's ever going to come around, I'm 32, terrified of cutting him off and obviously have no where to really go. I mean, yes, and my p's agree - if he can't s**t it's time to get off the pot and they have agreed to let me stay with them. I never seem to have money - so I'd say I'd be living with them until the next guy comes along. Honestly too and I hope no one really comes down on me for this... I don't really like living alone. I mean, I can do it when I've needed to... I moved to chicago a few years ago all by myself, I just like people around me that I care about. I actually would WANT to live with my p's - is that crazy? I think I am crazy, I must be - I got involved with a commitment phobe!

Re: Bad times, FH a commitment phobe!

So are you just staying with him for fear of being alone???? I think (from what I've read in your posts) that you know that he isn'r going to ever committ. I've had that situation with past boyfriends...I just stayed with them because I didn't want to be alone knwing that they were never going to committ to me and it mad me more miserable. (But I was still living at home)

I'm not coming down I just want to try and help

Sorry you are in such a bad situation

I'm so sorry to hear about this!

It sounds like you both are already going through teh phases of a break up.

Hold your head up high!

You will find someone else. It's not too late. You're not too old. I know someone who stayed with a guy until it finally WAS too late...and then he moved on with a younger woman.

I, myself, ended a 2 year relationship. I was in my early 20's at the time, but within 1 year, I met my DH. 1 year after that, we were engaged! Never once has he made me feel like he isn't 100% commited to me, our marriage, our future family together.

Re: Bad times, FH a commitment phobe!

Wow, I really sympathize with you and wish you strength. May God bless you with self love, resilience and calm. I understand all that you're saying...you love him, he loves you, you've invested 3 years, you have a home together. However, he proposed 6 months into the relationship while still reelig from his marriage...that was 2.5 years ago and no progress has been made.

I know it's hard because I did it and felt like dying but you need to focus on YOU! It sounds like you haven't been through your 'selfish' stage...the one where you work, go out with friends, shop, enjoy your cat, enjoy your own place. You can't stay with someone only because you don't like being alone (I mean, I know it's also because you love him and he makes you hurt less - but love isn't everything and he also makes you hurt). You need to love yourself, appreciate all your beauty, all your glory. Undrstand what you deserve...someone who loves you, someone who respects you, someone who takes you seriously, someone who shares your dreams and wants the same things out of life.

You're neglecting yourself and you won't be able to make him or anyone happy until and unless you're happy.

I know you stated that your job would be 5 min away from his house as opposed to an hour from your parents...but take the extra hour ride to work and useit to your advantage. Think, listen to music, focus on you. It's a small price to pay for emotional independence.

It sounds like you both need time away. By you staying with him you are simply enabling him to continue with things the way they are so he's sort of 'having his cake and eating it too'...but what about you?

Don't neglect you! Pray, ask God to give you the clarity and strength that you need. He never dissapoints!

I wish you happiness!

never seem to have money - so I'd say I'd be living with them until the next guy comes along

This is what you need to move away from. You need to be strong, independent and love yourself 100% before you committ to anyone, including living with someone.

Regarding the $$$, maybe you can try temp work till you find a permanent job (what field are you in), then try to find a friend or female roomate who you can split the costs of living with.

I have a funny feeling if you work on yourself, build up strength and move on slowly but surely he will be back for you, if it's meant to be.

What is that saying, if you love someone 'let it go' if it comes back to you it was meant to be. It may sound cheesy but I truly believe that.

He needs time to think things out, or he will end up resenting you and the relationship if you pushed to get married.

You need to be strong, go out get a massage, have dinner with some girl friends, join a gym, do some good/fun things for yourself. Believe that you will come out of this a stronger person.

I wish you the best of luck and everything in life.

I don't know what the final verdict is, but just wanted to let you have some . I agree that you have to get yourself in a position to be independent. It ***** living alone, but if need be, then need be. Waiting around for someone else to come along before you do that is not healthy for you. I would however stop pressing the issue with him, because you should not have to convince him to marry you. Just make what decision is best for you.

You need to live on your own to figure out what's what. So does he. It doesn't mean that you won't be together, but you have put some space between you and the situation. How can you be you without first knowing who you are? You need to get busy with yourself. Get yourself a job, whatever it is. Give it a few months and get yourelf your own apt, or an apt with a roommate if you can't afford it. You need to be accountable for yourself first before you can be part of someone else's life. As far as your FH is concerned, keep him close, but at a comfortable distance until you both figure out who you are individually. Good luck

Re: Bad times, FH a commitment phobe!

Oh, I am so sorry that you are going through all of this. I remember what thats like staying in a relationship for three and a half years because it was comfortable, safe, secure but as soon as those initial couple of months of sadness and feeling alone ended....life happened. To me. Around me. I just started living. I started relying on myself to meet my emotional needs and I started seeing what kind of life I wanted to lead and started living it. There really isn't a way to convince someone into marriage and ultimatum's do nothing. The truth is, your life is up to you. Does this mean he will never want to commit? No. Does it mean that he doesn't love you? No. What it means is that you two are on two completely different paths and maybe one day, when you're living your life and creating your own dreams, that he will turn around and 'be ready' for the type of commitment you deserve. But, hon, please don't settle. Somewhere, anywhere, find the strength to realize you deserve better than this. Settling can create a lifetime of unhappiness and resentment, something you by no means deserve. Women are so much stronger than we realize and if you really checked yourself out in the mirror, you'd realize that at this point, at 32 years old, there is nothing you can't do. This may very well be the scariest part of your life and I know how horrible the world may seem to you now, but truthfully, none of us has any idea what the future holds. I love that saying: If you want to make God laugh, make a plan. You and you alone hold the key to your own happiness and if you create a strong life for yourself, it may just motivate him to do the same. In the meantime, take care of yourself, vent to us, your family and friends, and surround yourself with only positive people who will remind you of how great and worthy you really are.
