Bad times, FH a commitment phobe!

Original post by Mrs.Ptobe

It took 3 years but I'm realizing FH is commitment phobic. Here's the brief version - but it's still long.

We met almost 3 years ago. He was legally separated and the separation agreement would mature in 2005. Well, in that time we fell in love despite the fact I never wanted a step child, I overcame that b/c my love was so strong and my friends and family really liked him and supported me so much. The child and I love eachother very much and he's so looking forward to us getting married and him getting half sibblings. He gave me a beautiful diamond ring withing 6 months of us being together and we bought a house shortly after that. I had a cat from before him and she came along and between the 2 of us we adopted 3 more cats. So we've had a little family of sorts. We had a fight about 6 months after the initial engagement and I threw the ring at him, this hurt him and we put all bets on hold. Last 4th of July he gave me my ring back. Since then I've made a few attempts to 'plan' a wedding. He's still waiting for the actual piece of paper as far as I know - but both parties signed for the divorce after all (she gave a lot of threats that she wouldn't sign for a long time).

Anyway, the first time I tried to talk wedding, FH came to me and said 'I'm so excited, I feel like I'm getting married for the first time'. I was so elated! About 2 weeks later we decided to get some ideas and went to the Vineyard Caterers to check out their wedding info. My p's live in Suffolk so we took them along. When we went back to their house afterward, FH had a horrible nose bleed! I mean gushing! He continued to get them over the next several days. Then he told me that due to his job loss at the time, it was too much stress to think about a wedding when we're struggling with the mortgage and other expenses.

January 2005 he got a job (I lost mine however) and signed off on the final divorce papers... I started dabbling in wedding ideas again. We had a fight about it - I threatened to leave for my p's house and he suggested I stay with a friend (would have been MOH). My friend was pregnant at the time and they can't host me there. I returned home that night and FH was crying that he didn't want to be without me. I said 'fine, you said in the beginning that in March you'd be divorced, April 1st either s**t or get off the pot. He giggled and agreed.

As 4/1 approached he told me that we'd go upstate for a weekend at Villa Roma and we'd talk about our wedding plans. Well, we went it cost more than we can afford due to his huge pay cut and my being out of work. All so that at dinner he could tell me that he wants us to be more financially stable before getting married and that I need to get a job and that I need to be nicer to his family (they are very hard people to get along with and are obsessed with his ex troubles - being that I started to lose faith in us really ever getting married I started to pull away). I said fine, but I want a date. He said that he's trying to get a promotion that he should know about in June so we'll set the date over the summer.

So here's June, his company loves him, but their not making any promo decisions right now. So, he takes a trip to Maine every 4th of July. This year his son is going. I, due to an unemployment hearing that I may have scheduled during that time, may only be able to go for the weekend, he's going for 7 days. So we decided that after Maine we'll set a wedding date.

FH has not been sleeping the last few nights and I've noticed him becoming emotionally distant. I asked him what's on his mind, he initially said he wasn't sure. I asked about work and us and he said all are fine, he just feels overwhelmed and anxious about something. I then asked if it had to do with setting a wedding date. He like lit up and said 'yeah, that may be it'. So now I'm PO'd as I'm sure you can all imagine. I told him this is a huge problem. He said he's aware. He said he loves me and wants to be with me. I asked him what is more stressful to think about setting a wedding date or breaking up? He looked at me - I said let me ask you this 'would you feel better if you didn't have the stress of a wedding' he said yes. I said then the breaking up is the answer then! He cried, I cried. It was a horrible night. I went to my p's who are very aggravated (they're obviously disappointed that he's made promises to me and his son and everyone else and now he's flaking out. They don't really want my cat - but I need her, please no one tell me to get rid of her - she's been the only constant in my life). I packed up my cat last night and stayed on a couch at my p's. It broke my heart to leave the cat he got for me behind, but I can't take her. Yet the only 2 people in this whole world she trusts is me and FH (she was badly abused). At my p's my cat is stuck in one small room. She cried the whole night, I did too. I called FH twice b/c I missed him so much. He loves me and wants us to be together. I woke up at 7am this morning... I could barely sleep the whole night. I decided to drive to our house before the traffic. FH was still sleeping when I got here and he's still sleeping now. He wanted me to take a nap with him. I tried going into our spare room to sleep (I'm so tired) but it was too bright and I wanted to be in his arms so bad. I went into our room and tried to lay with him. He held me and it felt good, but I know in my heart that I'm just going to get hurt if I keep letting him do this and that it's hard enough to muster up the courage to leave, how can I do it when I want to be in his arms so bad and it feels so good to be in his arms. I told him I love him, he responded 'I love you too', I told him I wanted to be with him he said he wanted that too. I said I wanted to get married and he said nothing. When I pushed, he said 'it's 9am, I just went to sleep 2 hours ago can we just take a nap together get a few winks - I haven't slept all week'. I tried, but couldn't relax. Everything from how much I love him, to how much this hurts, to our first kiss, the first time we held hands, to thinking about joing a dating service and how hard will it be to find someone to love again, to the fact I'm 32 and I have no single friends. I'm so overwhelmed and so sad. I know most of you probably think that if I want marriage and he doesn't that I'm probably doing the right thing no matter how emotionally and otherwise uncomfortable it is to go to my p's house. My family was great last night and they totally felt that I had to do this. He has to see what it's like without me, I've been too available and accessable. I sacrificed my desire to get married b/c of his situation, but it couldn't last, the idea was that once things were done with the divorce we'd move on. He said yesterday that he spent so long running away from his ex that he hasn't dealt with the pain and issues from the bad marriage. It's so different though... they got married only b/c she got pregnant. Oh, and he's also questioning himself as a father... he thinks he's an incompetent father and is unsure of his ability or desire to have other children b/c he doubts his ability so much. I told him that with our kids living with him and being involved in their lives it will be so different - funny enough that's exactly what he told me when we first started dating to eliviate my fears. He's the first man I ever trusted - I was 29 when we met... no my heart aches so bad and I'm so scared!

I've hit rock bottom. I'm in therapy already so that's already in place. I have no job, I have not a dime to my name yet I have credit card bills a student loan and a car payment, I'm in love with a man who loves me but can't give me what I need, I'm 32 and want to have a family. Any kind words???? What do I do to encourage him to commit? Is it too late? If so, how do I start over? How do I meet people? How do I get past the pain of losing a man that I thought was the one and was so almost perfect for me? How do I trust anyone again? How do I cope with sleeping on a couch in my p's spare room for an indefinite amount of time with my cat stuck in that one room too? HELP!

You need to live on your own to figure out what's what. So does he. It doesn't mean that you won't be together, but you have put some space between you and the situation. How can you be you without first knowing who you are? You need to get busy with yourself. Get yourself a job, whatever it is. Give it a few months and get yourelf your own apt, or an apt with a roommate if you can't afford it. You need to be accountable for yourself first before you can be part of someone else's life. As far as your FH is concerned, keep him close, but at a comfortable distance until you both figure out who you are individually. Good luck

I agree. You need to work on you. Get a job, save money. Set a budget...It seems like you are counting on men to keep yourself afloat, and I think every woman should be self-sufficient before counting on a man. That said, from your words it sounds like you are more afraid of being alone at 32 than losing your FH. Being single is really, really hard, but if I were you I would never be happy with a man who did not want to marry me as much as I wanted to marry him. Good luck, and be strong. Stay with your parents for a while, but get a job--ANY JOB--and get out on your own.

First, huge to you

Next, would you be willing to have a small backyard BBQ wedding and then a bigger one later? If its all about the $$ then he shouldnt have trouble commiting to that and then when you have more $$ do the big reception??

I could not agree more. Honestly you are a smart mature woman. At 32 you should be able to stand on your own 2 feet if needed. You can't always rely on others to support you. Knock on wood what if you were married and something happened with your husband.. divorce lets say and your parents were no longer around ( again knock on wood) what would you do???? These are things you need to think about before you even begin to think about making a life and family with someone else.

I hate that you are hurting.

You may feel that being married will give you the support you need to get through this but IMO relationships test the individuals and any problems you bring with you only magnify. So, that said keep working on your problems in therapy, get a job asap and get rid of that debt-you will not be truly free until you do-and be on your own.

At 32 you are STILL YOUNG but not young enough to NOT take care of yourself, and by not working and worrying about someone else you're not taking care of YOU. then if he is there after you get in gear, work on the 'us' but ONLY after you work on 'you.'

It doesn't sound like the $$ is the real issue here. SOunds more like he's afraid to get into a committed relationship again. I'd hate to see you wait amd wait, only to put your life on hold and he decides 5 years from now that he doesn't want to get married at all.

So sorry you are having so much heartache that you don't deserve!!

The first thing I noticed from your FH's story is that you said that his separation agreement was supposed to be for 3 years. That is a REALLY long separation agreement. 1 year is more common. So, I was wondering, is it possible that he made it 3 years because he was afraid to get divorced? Is it possible he was not honest with you about the agreement?

Just curious. I'm a lawyer, so I'm thinking in these terms.

I really am sorry. And I do understand that you are concerned for your cat(s).

Sorry you sound stressed. The situation is not good but I am glad you are seeking help. I don't want to be critical of a bad situation so I will just give you lots of and do a lot of and wish you all the best for a wonderful future that you DO deserve. You are ONLY 32 it is only a number don't worry so much about it! You have so many wonderful years ahead of you!

never seem to have money - so I'd say I'd be living with them until the next guy comes along

This is what you need to move away from. You need to be strong, independent and love yourself 100% before you committ to anyone, including living with someone.

Regarding the $$$, maybe you can try temp work till you find a permanent job (what field are you in), then try to find a friend or female roomate who you can split the costs of living with.

I have a funny feeling if you work on yourself, build up strength and move on slowly but surely he will be back for you, if it's meant to be.

What is that saying, if you love someone 'let it go' if it comes back to you it was meant to be. It may sound cheesy but I truly believe that.

He needs time to think things out, or he will end up resenting you and the relationship if you pushed to get married.

You need to be strong, go out get a massage, have dinner with some girl friends, join a gym, do some good/fun things for yourself. Believe that you will come out of this a stronger person.

I wish you the best of luck and everything in life.

Karen

Okay I have to jump in here, First I want to give you HUGS...Love is the most wonderful..yet also the most painful of experiences to go through.

I have some insight here, because I have been married before, and I think I went through a lot of the emotions that your FH is going through. I can tell you how things looked from my end, may-be it will give you some help.

My FH is the MOST wonderful man in the world, but he also had to be the most patient. I met him shortly after I seperated from my husband (bad timing), and he had to deal with sooo many emotions. I won't get into the story because it's really not about me. What I want to say is as our relationship progressed, I went through sooo many doubts, I had trust issues, but I also questioned myself and the decisions I made for myself. My love for my FH is VERY different, than that from my first husband. I was a KID (18) when I got married the first time, and it was lala love land. This relationship is more about a choice, and a choice of being happy and stable. SO may-be your FH is trying to identify each of his feelings, as he should before making a committment like marriage. I don't think marriage is anything to be rushed into. In order for me to be willing to marry again, I had to make sure I was 100% okay on my own TWO feet. Also, that he was too. It doesn't sound like your FH REALLY took the time to be by himself and let his heart heal, and figure out what he wanted. SO now he is in a situation, feeling pressure, probably pretty afraid, not wanting to lose you, but not wanting to make ANOTHER mistake. Being divorced gives you a different perspective to relationships.

My advise as so many ladies stated before. I really don't think you should wait around for someone to come rescue you. You have to be independent. I COULD have lived with my FH right away, but waitied 2 1/2 years, i bought a house, got a roomate, and figured out exactly who I was, only then could I Truely make a good decision for myself and my future, and actually bring something to the table whenit was time to talk marriage. You will feel so much better if you do this, never stranded, never desperate, you will always know you have yourself to rely on. Take kitty with you...pets are the best medicine!

It may all work out int he end if you and your FH take the time you need, or...it may not, but make yourself strong and no matter the outcome you will be OK!

Sorry i didn't mean to go on and on...Ijust wish you the best, and hope things work out, its the interim that is the hardest, once you know what path you will take, it Does get easier. Good Luck to You.

Re: Bad times, FH a commitment phobe!

Hmmm, I think a lot of us have been in this, or a similar situation. I was with someone for 3+ years when we broke up and I moved out. At the time, I was totally and absolutely devastated... I loved him so freakin' much, and the reason why we broke up wasn't because we didn't love each other, but because we were totally different people going down totally different paths. I remember being so fearful of the unknown, of being alone, finding my own place (I was in school at the time so I didn't have any money either). It's the scariest thing in the world when you've grown attached to someone and then you have to think of life alone. And, I'll admit, the first 2-3 months were hell. Bawling my eyes out every night in a lonely empty apartment. But, like someone said, after about 3 months, it's like all of a sudden the skies cleared - I could look back without the rose-tinted glasses and really see the relationship for what it was, and really see that as much as we loved each other, it would have never worked. It hurt like hell, it really did, but then 5 months later I met DH - the most incredible person I've ever known. And instantly we knew - within 1 year we were married. It takes a lot of strength and a lot of tears, but you can't put your life on hold for anyone. It's time to be selfish and though it may feel like this is the only man for you, truthfully, there are so many others out there who are just as good, if not better...

I need to be honest with you and maybe it will hurt but, you keep saying you are 32 years old and that you are afraid to be alone and that you don't know how long it will be before you meet someone else and get married if you leave him - it sounds like you really really want to be married and that this desire is not allowing you to think clearly - you have to step back and realize that if you need counseling to help you to get married and you are now trying to CONVINCE him to marry you - that there is a huge problem and marriage - a lincese or whatever - is not going to make it better but actually make it worse.

If he gives in and marries you just because youa r ebeing a pain - or even worse you give him an altermatum (sp) and he does this just because he does not want to lose you or he does not want to hear about it anymore - then be prepared for years of him being bitter and perhaps a failed marriage in the long run.

I have seen this happen to friends - they want to be married so bad and they think they are in a race with time - then they push it and the guy marries them because he feels cornered - then it turns into a terrible mess later.

What you need is to let him be ready on his own - and if youa re willing to wait then so be it - if you are NOT - then you need to think about how to help yourself - perhaps if you get your own things in order - a job - your own place an independent life and just date him - let him feel how it is to be on his own two feet and see you on yours - it may help heal his worries and make things better in the long run -

it is not about the wedding - in the end the wedding is just a day - that day passes and then you are left with him and you and all the problems you had before - the wedding does not erase the issues - it can inflame them.

Re: Bad times, FH a commitment phobe!

Thank you all so much. I have to say after listening to everyone, I think I know what I need to do. Actually, the greatest help was from my sister who said much of what you guys are saying but is encouraging me (she knows us and how we are as a couple) to stick it out - but with a DEFINITE timeline... not one that will be used as an ultimatum, in fact he may never know when that date is, and who knows - he may end it before that date ever comes (he's been very flaky about this whole thing and has tried to put all the blame on me - while I am very much in need of a life makeover - he made a lot of big promises to keep me around leaving me feeling lied to, betrayed and manipulated).

I am going back tonight cat and all, BUT with a promise to myself to get a job - pretty much anything I can get within the next week or so (anyone hiring?), and I'm going to make plans to do things with friends, BUT I'm going to make plans to do things I want to do without him or anyone else if need be. I actually moved to chicago for grad school about 8 years ago - I knew no one and I now know chicago like the back of my hand... met a lot of people - granted mostly superficila friendships that haven't weathered my move back to NY, but it was the experience. I was the most independent person anyone in my circle knew. It's like the relationship drained me of that and that has been a problem. Despite the distance I'm going to see my family more, and I'm going to make the effort to see the few friends I do have more often.

As for FH's long separation agreement.... well, he moved out and tried to divorce her and get custody of his son about 8 years ago. She refused to sign ANY papers and while he struggled to pay attorney fees - her family financed her's. I'm not making excuses and I only know what has been in the last 3 years or so, but she really didn't want to move on or make it easy. His first attorney raped him for money, the second got him the agreement. B/c she was in school and not living with her family and still refused to divorce him at the time of the separation agreement, she got a lot and he got ripped a new one. As far as why he would do that - he met me 3 months AFTER he signed that agreement. He basically gave into almost everything she wanted just to get her to leave him alone. It was a BAD divorce. Of course having a child didn't make things any easier. Honestly though - he did share the agreement with my father early in our courtship so it's not like he was hiding something, just none of us knew or understood the emotional end of it beyond the legal.

I have no idea what the outcome will be, but either way with or without him I need to get on my feet. I've never been financially independent really and I've always strived to be. I got my Real Estate license and am working on that, but I also know that this will not pay the bills this month. FH keeps telling me that I have about $1k in bills due in the next few weeks and I'm down to my last $200 in the bank. I have no investments or anything else I could even sell for the money. I need to get on my feet - fast!

Thanks for all the support - I'll let you know how things go. I promise you this - once I get myself together I will revisit our situation with FH and at least if he is still unwilling to commit I can move on and not feel financially trapped. he may even be feeling that in some ways I'm financially trapping him right now b/c he's probably thinking that I'm expecting him to pay my bills this month. I'm not really, I just got caught up in a tornado at a bad time. I will work out myself, I'll give myself about another 6 months or so, then we will see then after 6 months of no pestering him with 'are you ever going to marry me' (help me with this one guys - I'm a weakling), then we'll see where we are at. If it's no - then I'll go apartment hunting and join a dating service (since I'll have money) and match.com (I know really no single people). I'll keep you all posted and thanks again for the and I need them!

I don't mean to sound rude or harsh, but why would you so badly want to marry a man who makes you feel 'lied to, betrayed and maniuplated' You need to expect more for yourself that that.

As someone who knows yours and FH's situation, I really believe you are doing the right thing by giving it a chance and working on yourself and the relationship. There is often times in a relationship, especially after a large arguement where trust may have waned (sp) a bit. But just as he gave you a chance way back when when he felt the same way you are describing, you are doing the same for him. Don't think of it as a betrayal...he is just overwhelmed. Like I said before...get yourself together, let him get himself together. Let your lives be settled and as stress free as possible (him over the divorce and you both working and catching up on bills). Once things are more stable it will be easier for you both to figure out what your wedding plans will be. Just remember though, harassing him about marriage will not help the cause. Relationships are enough work w/ out the extra stresses that you are both dealing with. Get more involved w/ the community and w/ work. Stop reading into things, and start believing that you are lovable...once you do you will stop questioning the love he is professing to you. I have been w/ FH for 7 years, and we have been through a lot of stuff (good, bad, and the ugly) and their were definitely times when I felt doubtful or uncertain. You work through it because that is a part of life. you love each other...enjoy loving each other for a while. Keep in mind, that time frame we were talking about is flexible...don't set deadlines. It's just a guide to feel him out and how the relationship is going and his mental state (as well as yours). I know you want to get married (as we all do, otherwise we would not all be here ), and it will happen when it's supposed to. Keep the faith and your head held high. Stay motivated!

Also, thank you. I try to help any way I can

I don't know you and FH so I don't know about the timeline thing, but what you mentioned about going down to city hall and getting a marriage license is NOT a good idea. You need to give it time before you get married. Sometimes money being tight and postponing the wedding can be the BEST thing ( I know this from experience). it gives you time to get other things in order. Also, if you don't have money, there's usually a reason fore that, either there's some strong external force that sapping you both, one of you doens't have a job, or you've been irresponsible. All of these are things that should be remedies before the wedding. Also, you just don't seem happy. He may be the commitment phobe here, but you are the one who doesn't really seem like getting married would make you happy. I'm not sayin you CAN'T be happy with this man, but you just don't SEEM happy, you're describing him hurting and manipulating you, etc. Also, if you don't give him time to come around in his own time, you'll never know. Like a prevous psoter said so many people see marriage as the end all and be all, and then it ends in a train wreck because they weren't prepared for it. Also, you're 32 years old. you described how independent you once were. You need to strive to get that back and bring back that spark of life in you. If you aren't independent before you're married, it's not likely that you'll get more independent AFTER you're married, especially marrying a man who seems to make you feel so insecure that you're willing to throw your independence away for some semblance of security. I mean that's the thing, it doens't seem like you have any REAL security with him. Your wedding date is unknown, he's got his issues, and why else would you have lost all of your independence? try to find a roommate. My friend found her roommate on craisglist and they became best friends. if you do move back in with your parents, make sure it's only for a short period of time and you have a strict timeline to get your OWN place, not move back in with FH, but your OWN place. Get a taste of that again before committing to a marriage.

best of Luck.

Re: Bad times, FH a commitment phobe!

I so appreciate all the kindness. I'm taking FutureMrs.H's advice to work on it. He did it for me once before. I am having a hard time trusting him right now, if I can't get that back then I know he's not the one. Hey some people can work past cheating! I'm not really one of those, but this is far from cheating.

I'm realizing how confused and overwhelmed we both are about life. I woke up at 6:30am this morning and went for a job shadow interview and when I came home FH was telling me how proud he was of me for getting up and going as he knows that 7am is a stretch for me (I'm not a morning person). He seems calmer when I at least attempt to take charge over my finances. I do need some time to myself and he is going to Maine as of Thursday for about 7 or 8 days, so I can get my thoughts in order without leaving all my belongings in one place and living somewhere else. This is not a good time to start moving around. I can't imagine trying to pack and unpack and interview along with dealing with a relationship gone bad and the pain of that. Once I have a job and some semblence of order, then we can see where we are at. My Best friend told me not to make any life changing decisions at this point b/c there's too many things going on... take care of one thing at a time and to be honest my career/financial picture if more important than moving around and right now - that may add more confusion to my world.

I'm at a point where I called Macy's to cancel my wedding gown and I'm not planning on getting married. I'm not really wearing my ring, but will keep it in MY possession until we talk about things in a few months. I'm treating him like I did when we first met with the exception of the living situation, but my guard is back up and he's going to have to prove a lot to me including that he can commit. If by the winter (assuming he gets that sealed divorce decree by then - they signed the final papers in January 2005?) he can't commit, then I will move me and my things out.

I doubt it's going to work out either folks so don't think I'm thinking that I can change him or that I'm dreaming. I just know that I need time for me and moving my life around during all this chaos may just prevent me from focusing on a way to pay my bills this month - putting me deeper in the hole. It's time to do things on MY timeline, not his. Right now he seems VERY loving and kind of kissing my *ss. But I'm keeping an emotional distance in my heart right now, I need to heal my wound, but not at the expense of my livelyhood or finding my livelyhood so that I can pay bills b/c if I concentrate on anything else right now - an appartment will be an impossibility if I screw up my credit. As of right this moment everything is being payed on time, it's this month that may be a problem. I need to concern myself with that. If Macy's gives me at least a portion of my deposit back - that will pay my bills this month and I can get one less thing off my back and concern myself with finding a job so that at the RIGHT time, I can move out on my own.
