VS is awesome! They have a lot on sale right now. I bought 3 suits from online already for HM.
You can also try Macys online for sale bathing suits!

Getting swimsuits at a store where you can try them on right now will be difficult. I would try some beach front communities that will have the end of the summer sales. Fire Island stores have tons on sale right now. The NJ Shore does too. I am guessing the Hamptons would too.

you can also try venus online - they're cheapo suits but if you don't want to spend a lot, it's good.

I second blums.. they have alot of really nice bathing suits. They are kind of expensive but good.
I went there a few weeks ago and was looking through the sales rack and got 2 betsy johnson bathing suits for $20 each!

Not this time of year. They replace swimsuits with winter coats. Its the same dept.
Actually Pennies too, DH's cousin is the floor designer at a Pennies and she already cleared out ALL the swimsuits.

I'm sure some of the larger sporting goods stores would have some, like Sports Authority or D!ck's Sporting. They probably won't be super cute, but you might want to keep 'em in mind as a last-resort kinda thing.
(I personally like the sporty ones, but that's just me!)
