I am going to be making brownies for Saturday. The recipe calls for oil--does it matter which kind? The only kind I have in the house is olive oil--would that work and taste OK or should I buy vegetable oil?

Re: Baking question...
OMG!! No, no, no on the olive oil!! Buy vegetable oil!
Here's a good (and simple) brownie recipe if you want it:
4 squares unsweetened baking chocolate 1 stick (1/2 cup) of butter 4 eggs 2 cups sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 cup all purpose flour
grease 9x11 baking pan and preheat oven to 350
melt chocolate and butter over low heat, set aside
beat eggs, sugar and vanilla until light and fluffy
fold in melted chocolate
fold in flour
pour into baking pan and bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until fork inserted into center comes out clean. Let cool 10 minutes and chow down!!
(If you want to add nuts or chocolate chips, fold them in after the flour)

Re: Baking question...
I made this one last sunday and it was awesome it has no vegetable oil.
Ingredients: . 2 teaspoons vanilla extract . 1/4 teaspoon salt . 1 cup (2 sticks) butter or margarine . 2 cups sugar . 3/4 cup HERSHEY'S Cocoa or HERSHEY'S Dutch Processed Cocoa . 1 cup chopped nuts (optional) . 4 eggs . 1/2 teaspoon baking powder . 1 cup all-purpose flour
Directions: 1. Heat oven to 350°F. Grease 13x9x2-inch baking pan.
2. Place butter in large microwave-safe bowl. Microwave at HIGH (100%) 2 to 2-1/2 minutes or until melted. Stir in sugar and vanilla. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well with spoon after each addition. Add cocoa; beat until well blended. Add flour, baking powder and salt; beat well. Stir in nuts, if desired. Pour batter into prepared pan.
3. Bake 30 to 35 minutes or until brownies begin to pull away from sides of pan. Cool completely in pan on wire rack. Frost if desired. Cut into bars. About 36 brownies.

Re: Baking question...
artificial vanilla is cheaper than vegitable oil, if you buy store bought vanilla then its between 1-2 dollars. good luck

Re: Baking question...
lol - yeah, please do NOT EVER use olive oil for baking brownies! :)
You can also substitue applesauce for oil in some recipes. I've had it before and it comes out about the same!

Re: Baking question...
I've read that replacing the oil with unsweetened applesauce makes the brownies healthier. I've never tried it, but the measurement is the same. Has anyone done that? How does it taste? I always forget to buy the applesauce when I bake. I've started using Egg Beaters and Splenda, which means I can eat more

Re: Baking question...
Buy it in a box and make it. Veggie oil or Canola oil!
