Baking question (don't laugh at me for being stupid)
If a cake mix says vegetable oil, and I use olive oil, what will happen?

I guess that it would be fine. It might change the taste slighty.

Olive oil has a strong taste so it's not a good idea to use it in a cake. You want to use something like Mazola or Wesson oil - a corn oil, canola oil, etc.

Use melted butter or a can of diet coke instead.

Ok- dh is picking it up one the way home- here is another question- If I put chocolate chips in the batter, will they melt and make the vanilla cake look brown, or will they stay intact and be yummy?

The oil is a substitute for butter or margarine. I checked one of my cookbooks for scratch baking and they use butter or margarine, not oil. They use about 1/2 - 2/3 cup. You could try melting some butter or margarine, and use that, starting with a half cup, adding more if the batter seems thick.

They should be fine because they are suspended in the batter. If you ever run out of oil again, the ratio is 1/2 :1 oil/butter if you want to substitute.

I always use half oil and half butter/margarine when I make a cake from a mix... It comes out great that way. If all you have is Olive oil Butter/margarine is Def the way to go

Yeah, if you take regular cake mix, use a can of diet coke and one or two egg whites, it comes out the same with SOOOO much less fat. No one I have ever made it for knew the difference.

Re: Baking question (don't laugh at me for being stupid)
The chips shouldn't melt all the way. Most should remain solid...but will be gooey and soft.
ETA: It will be fine to add the chips. Go for it!

Re: Baking question (don't laugh at me for being stupid)
Steph, whatever you do, do not use olive oil.
When my coworkers and I had bagel day on Friday, we had lots of assorted people from around the company come around to the cube where our food was and help themselves to the desserts. We were the last department to do 'bagel day' at the time so people who didn't participate among themselves thought it was ok to mooch off of us. Well, we got sick of it so one day my coworker made her brownies with olive oil instead of veggie oil. We knew not to touch them but the moochers didn't. We actually heard a few people gag when they walked away with our food. They came around a lot less often after that, and if they did, they didn't touch our brownies.

Re: Baking question (don't laugh at me for being stupid)
definately not olive oil
1/3 to 1/4 cup oil = 1/2 cup butter, margarine, shortening
