Well, they're mostly done - they're still drooping a tiny bit at the tips, so we'll have the tips supported for a little while longer. But no more taping up the ears! Yay! Here are some pictures:

Bama is a Boxer. Certain dogs, like Boxers, Dobermans, and Great Danes get their ears cropped when they're very young. It's mostly for aesthetic reasons, but it can help prevent ear infections. Not all dogs get their ears cropped; usually the ones that do are show quality dogs (they have to have their ears cropped in order to compete in shows - it's a rule).
So after the ears are cropped, the cartilage isn't strong enough to make the ears stand (because they're born with normal floppy ears) so you have to tape them up with a support stick down the ear until the cartilage becomes stiff and the ears can stand. It usually takes about 5 months of taping up the ears before they can stand.

Not to start an argument on cropping, because its an owners choice and an acceptable practice, and done under medical supervision but it is only a rule for cropped ears here in the US. England and other countries have banned the practice even for show dogs.

coxmandi.... i have a minpin & refused to crop his ears... but they say that soon even in the US they will stop cropping for dog showing!

Wow, I never would have known that. 5 months??? And I thought two weeks to recover from neuter surgery was a long time. I'm glad he's almost done. Thank you for the explanation.

Yes, that's true. It's funny how here in the U.S. show dogs have to be 'un-altered' (i.e. un-neutered/spayed) but yet the ears have to be cropped.
FYI when we got Bama his ears were already cropped.

Annie, he looks great! My BIL has a mini-doberman (like Jess) and didn't crop the ears either. It looks cute both ways.

Wow! what a BEAUTIFUL dog. my DH is OBSESSED with boxers- had one when he was younger. as soon as we get a house we're getting one. Imagine a boxer and a chihuahua? ha ha!

Yeah, ok I guess he IS getting big - I was looking at some of his puppy pictures last night and I couldn't believe how teeny he was! But he still looks so little next to his dad He's got about 20 more lbs to gain....

That might work out - you never know! Bama's favorite friend at the dog park is a chihuahua mix named Rosie

boxers are so sweet. my friend has one, but unfortunatly hes getting old and wont be around too much longer. its so sad b/c hes such a sweet gentle dog.
