My fiancee and i are constantly looking for whether or not we want to do a dj or band .... here is the thing i would rather go with a dj b/c a dj plays a variety of music and my father daughter dance is a country song ... he claims that a band is nicer... but not all bands play all types of music.... what do you think?

We are having the EXACT same problem. We're thinking of going with a combo... Bravura and Starlight Express seem to be the most popular.

I went with a band b/c I just love the live element. I think most bands play a fairly amazing variety of music. . they all gave me a song list when I asked and most of the bands I talked to said they would learn one song - one said two - for your first dance. but either will be fun
it might end up more about cost b/c djs are obv a LOT cheaper

id love to have both.. but its just not in our budget
if you have the budget for it.. i'd say go for both
also if its a really good band.. they will play everything you want.. usually how you want it
some bands offer small dj services for breaks

ok ... i am still like pulling my hair out over the subject but when i went and talked to the rep that i have been dealing with in regards of our reception location she told me that there are bands that have djs attached ... i looked at the one site for for a band called Elite Music and they seemed alright... i dont know i am just boggled.

It wasn't even close for me. A band is much classier than a DJ. Although a band doesn't sound like the original music, they have much more entertainment value and most bands play every type of music.
I can see if you have mostly young people in your 20's coming to the wedding a dj may be more fun but it kind of reminds me of a Bat Mitzvah or sweet 16. If you can afford it, I'm sure you can find a band that plays what you want.

Yikes...then I guess lots of us are having non classy weddings! I think bands are great but I also think DJs are great too. I have seen some bands that were far less classy than DJs. Expense does not equal class in my opinion
