I don't even know where to start with this. We want a band, not a dj, but one who will sort of act as an MC the way a dj will. They need to be able to play a mix of everything - pop/rock, oldies, swing, everything. Also, they need to be able to learn our 'special' songs if they don't already know them. And probably play the cocktail hour as well.
As always, less is more with pricing. Also, per my hall's requirements, they have to be insured.
So, any recommendations? People you're working with for your wedding, good bands you heard at other people's parties, etc...
And any idea how many musicians I should be looking for?
I'd appreciate any words of advice you can give me.
thanks so much ladies

Re: bands
I totally recommend the band we are using, Soul Revival! I have seen them a few times, at a friends and a cousin's weddings. I have loved them every time I've seen them
They play all that you said you want and more. I know they learn special songs, they are learning some for us. FH requested alot of Stevie Wonder and Beatles too.
As far as how many musicians you need, I think it depends on the size of your hall and # of people you are having. We are having 9 musicians (I think, FH is in charge of the band )
I think their prices are extremely reasonable too. FM if you want to know what we are paying.
We are using New York Minute. They are a vendor on this site. We wanted a mix of music too. I saw them at their studio and they even arranged for me and my FH to see them live at a wedding (because my FH lives upstate and was coming in that weekend). They have 12 pieces, but you can use less to reduce the price. HTH.

Re: bands
I would totally recommend the band that we used--they were amazing--Renegade is the name of hte band & they are with liparamount. You can go to liparamount.com to view their song list. They know alot of songs & song exactly like the original band. Their song list although lon gisn't even close to what they can play--there was so much more. I gave them a song that wasn't on their list and he knew what song it was & already knew how to play it. They have a showcase at least once a month but book up fast. We didn't use them for our cocktail hour we had other music but they can do cocktail hours too. As long as you give them the songs a few months in advance they can learn them. My Dh wrote me a song & sang it to me that night while he played the guitar after one ballard the band was backing him up. They were amazing--peopel that were skeptical about a band at our wedding because they had never been to one with a band loved them---I totally recommend them & they are worth every penny. They have 8 members--which I think is pretty standard with most bands.
I was in the same situation when I went looking for wedding bands--there are alot out there and you should just go with what you like & who will meet all your needs. franklin wayne is a company, skyline orchestras is another popular one, their is paris & some others---in order to find what you want you will have to probably go to alot of showcases--i saw over 10 bands so don't be discouraged.
Good luck---I am sure you will the one you like. Dave the band leader of renegade is great--but i would start looking sooner rather than later because they book up fast.

Re: bands
We used the band Skyline. They are managed by Skyline Orchestras, the same company that has Code Bleu. Our guests STILL have not stopped raving about them. They play all types of music, and most of the band sings. They take turns doing different songs. One guy sounds just like Billy Joel. Our first song was a Don Henley song and the band sounded just like the record. My guests all had different favorite singers - they were all so good.
I generally think you should try for a band with as full a sound as you can afford (i.e. the band has one or more members that play the horns.) I think Skyline was about $5200 (9 musicians, incl. sax and trumpet players) and they were worth every penny. Oh, and they MC'd for us too. I think most good bands will do that.

Re: bands
We also had Skyline. They were incredible. They played everything from Swing and standards to Billy Joel, the Counting Crows and dance music. And they were very respectful of my 'must-play' and 'do not play' lists.
As NauticalBride said, almost everyone in the band sings. To me, that was a big advantage. Having multiple vocalists really helped them to capture the various styles of music.

Re: bands
We used Times Square Orchestra and everyone was up dancing including my grandma in a wheel chair and great aunt with a walker.
Numerous people who said that they normally don't like bands were extremely impressed.

we used Ken James Productions. They played my sister's wedding as well. We had some difficult and unusual music requests and they did them amazingly.

Re: bands
Our date is two weeks before yours and we booked our band two months ago. I found that a lot of the bands popular with LIWeddings members were already booked for our date. We ended up going with a NYC based band called Live Wire. They are moderately priced and will travel to LI. We saw them live and were very impressed, plus, they'll learn any song we want them to.
