Banns of Marriage

When am I supposed to start the Banns of Marriage at my church. I hope it's not too late.

I think you start it 3 or 4 weeks prior to your wedding....but do we have to do it or the church does it...I never understood this

That's a good question too. I guess I call my church Tuesday and find out. They are probably closed tomorrow, right?

i just asked my mom, and she said the church should take care of it.

ETA- this makes sense b/c the purpose of the banns is to put out a public notice for civil and canon law. it would alert the community that you are getting married and if you are married or related then the marriage could be stopped. if you were responsible for getting the banns printed it would be easy to 'get away' with a marriage that isnt valid in the eyes of the catholic church, hence the reason why the church should be in charge of it.

Yes, the church should be putting this out for you in the parish bulletin.... however, your FH (or which ever one of you is NOT the one getting married in their home parish) needs to also contact their parish to let them know they are getting married and to whom. then, BOTH churches will print the Banns of Marriage... the first 3 weeks before, the second 2 weeks before and the last a week before the wedding. these should be appearing in both parish bulletins.

what if your FH isnt catholic, but anglican? what do you do then?

Then it would be just posted in the Catholic's (In this case, your) parish bulletin. Your name and parish would be listed along with just his name. I don't believe Anglican churches do something like the Banns of Marriage... I am assuming NOT... so you probably don't even need to worry about contacting them.

Because the 3rd Bann is 3 weeks from the wedding,
the 2nd, 2 weeks from the wedding and the last, one week before the wedding.

crashing into this thread....you mean they are so meddling that they post that you're getting married NOT so that everyone knows, but so that someone could stop your wedding (for good reason of course)?? WOW. I've heard it all now.

Yep...

I think it's sad that the church would do such a thing and what would happen if someone came forward and stated the two shouldn't marry, the priest won't marry the couple?!?!?!?!

It's not meddling - it is done to protect the couple. It is done for two reasons, one, to announce it to the community and two, if someone had info that an individual is not free to marry - they should come forward. For example if someone was already married and you knew this-you should let the church know. And yes, if there was something that was brought to the priest's attention that would cause the marriage to not be valid-then he would refuse to marry them until the issue was resolved.

People lie. My husband used to work in the chancery office for RC and there were 2 instances where a couple applied to be married and the men had lied about being married, it happens.

yes i agree with you and i do not think it is meddling at all. like said before it is done to protect the couple. how would you feel if your FH was married already and he lied to you? wouldnt you want to know?

it is also an old tradition based on the origin of the name bann. way back this was the way to communicate thru the church. i think it is more of a tradition now, but it is still somewhat helpful.
