BAPTISM & CHRISTENING- Any Difference?

I went so far as to look it up in the dictionary and I'm still confused, any one else know. The reason why I'm asking is I'd like to know what we should put on out invites...p.s. we are Catholic.

They are the same thing as far as I understand it.

They are the same. I put 'Baptism' on Sean's invites and my sister put 'Christening' on her son's last year.

Where/When are you having it?? Sean's is in 3 weeks at Coral House. Not surprisingly, about 30 ppl have not responded!! Brings back wedding memories.

My mother makes it a point to say Baptism (she is Catholic too). I remember asking her why and I cannot remember her response. I think it was something like Baptism is specific to Catholics and Christening is non specific - i.e. any Christian religion?? Or it could be she said 'Baptism' is the traditional word for the sacrament. Shoot - I wish I could remember! I can ask her tomorrow and let you know...

While they are the same -- Catholics are baptized, as Baptism is the Sacrament (as in John the Baptist). The people who ran the seminar for new parents at our church were very specific to point this out to us, telling us it would be wrong to send invitations calling it a christening. I went to Catholic schools for most of my life and I still didn't get it -- yet as a catholic school girl I didn't question it! Still the one place I can't seem to open my mouth!

They are both the same.. Depends on how religious you are I guess.. I am not Catholic, I am Christian. Our son was dedicated.

ETS.... April2603..I am Christian, and it is not called a Christening. Not sure where the term Christening derived from but it may be another 'branch' of Christianity...

Kathi, I am having her Christening/Baptism in November and then the reception will be in a an Italian restaurant in Queens. I wanted a private ceremony and also wanted the Monsignor who married us to perform the ceromony that's why it's in November as opposed to October like I wanted it.
