The town of Huntington is good because you can hop from one restaurant/bar to another. The bars/restuarants have gotten a bit swankier over the years. It used to be known for more bars per square mile than any other place in the country. Many have closed but there are still a lot.
Long Beach is good in better weather.
That's all I know, my bar hopping days ended years ago.

Re: Bars in LI?
Hi there! I hang out all over in Port Jefferson. On Main street there's a whole lotta bars there. Billy's used to have dollar Millers on Weds nights. The Back Yard is dollar beers on Monday nights. Port Jazz is right there also which is a jazz club. I am actually going to the Printer's Devil for the first time this Friday.
If you don't want to be in Port Jefferson Village or if you are into more of the 'rock and roll' scene you can go closer to 347 to the Village Pub and Tara's Inn. Tara's has great food for reall cheap. For like $2 or $5 dollars you can have a bacon cheeseburger, fries, and salad. 'Tara Burgers' are actually pretty famous around the locals. I know because my hunny lives there.
I am not a big fan of the huntington scene but there is also the strip on Main Street in Smithtown too. There is the horse and Jockey, Molly Blooms, Napper Tandys, Katie Donagans, etc.
In Wantagh there's Mulchays too. I know alot of the local bars have the websites too. Plus I think there is a clublongisland.com or something. Run a search on yahoo or google and I thin you'll have some luck there!

Hmmm. Depends what kind of 'scene' you want. When I was younger, we used to go to Rockville Center all the time, there are a ton right around each other. There are also a bunch in Long Beach down toward Atlantic Beach.
