Basement Apartment Question - Airconditioners

Danielle and i are moving into a basement apartment in 2 months and we will be needing a Airconditioning for the living room. I am not sure of the size of the windows but I can show you a picture of what they look like so you have an idea.

I found one a/c at Pc Richards for $289. and I believe the brand was LG. Does anyone know of any other brands that make an A/c that would fit that window? Also I dont want to spend that much money for something we are going to use 5 weeks out of the year. Those 5 weeks are the only time that it is really hot down there...otherwise it is cool.

Thanks,
Scott

Check out Best Buy... their online stuff is usually cheaper than the store, and there is free shipping. Make sure you take good measurements, and figure out how many square feet you have to cool.

Also, maybe just fans and a dehumidifier would work just as well? Thats what we did in our basement apt.

We are only allowed one a/c and we are planning to put it in the living room and leave our bedroom door open.

How many fans do you have on in your apartment that it stays cool? How many windows do you have also? We have 1 in the kitchen, 1 in the living room, and 1 in the bedroom

Re: Basement Apartment Question - Airconditioners

We had 2 in the bedroom, a row of windows in the living room and that was it. Our basement apt. was not your typical basement though. We had full sized windows and 12 foot ceilings. It was ground level on our side, and the other side of the house was 'underground'.

That sounds nice. This apartment only has the 3 windows but it tends to stay pretty light in there....Im sorry there are 4 windows, the 4th one is in the Laundry room. I forgot about that one.

The storage room is pitch black, but that is because there are no windows in there.

I'd measure the window and go to Costco or BJs and see how well you do there.

It's hard to tell the measurments from that picture but if you take them to Mr. Jays - isn't that the big appliance store?? Best buy may have something as well.

I had a basement apartment and I didn't need an a/c at all and I am almost always warm. I did run a dehumidfier once or twice a week but with the windows closed and a fan I was fine.

Maybe wait and see how it is in August and get an end of season sale?

I know they are kinda expensive but why dont you look into a portable a/c.. They are a/c's that don't need to be installed into a window... I just think with the limited amount of window space that you have it might be better to have a portable one and u can have it in the living room durning the day and then at night move it to the bedroom.
I have seen them at costco for like 3 or 400. I also saw them in Pc richards. check around on line or ebay and maybe you can find something reasonable.

My future father in law knows someone at Jays, so maybe we will look into the portable A/c's. Is there anything that you have to attach to the outside with the portable a/c's? Or do you just plug it in and call it a day?

They still need to be vented out side.

Re: Basement Apartment Question - Airconditioners

we used to live in a basement apt and we just had a small a/c in the bedroom, and had a fan to blow the air from the BR into the rest of the apt (the LR and kitchen were pretty much one big room.) It did the job.

We live in a basement apt now..it's 2 bedroom and living room and dining room. We have one in the livign room and one in the bedroom.

The one for the bedroom we bought at walmart and it was cheap. We had to take out the window first and basically it takes up the entire window.

But we also use a fan and a dehumidifier...but you'll be amazed at how cool your apt will be in the summer b/c it IS a Basement!

Re: Basement Apartment Question - Airconditioners

Yeah we are going to have to remove the window also...The people that lived there before moved into a second floor apartment and have no use for the basement apartment A/c anymore...I wonder if I can get it from them...If not I will have to measure and get a new a/c.

We are only allowed to have one a/c in the apartment

Re: Basement Apartment Question - Airconditioners

It looks like we have the same windows! We also live in a basement apartment. We don't have an air conditioner though because we can't find any to fit the windows without having to bulk up around it.

We have a dehumidifier in the LR and a fan in our BR and it does the trick for us. It never really gets that hot down there so the fan works fine for us.
