Just wondering what you all have and if you have a slab, how do you like it?

Re: basement or slab????
I couldn't live without our basement - we need someplace to store all the Christmas decorations, tools, extra refrigerator, etc. We don't have a garage so the gardening stuff goes down there too. Ours is half unfinished (just cinderblock walls, concrete floor) and the other half they started to finish but it needs more work - drywall is up, and the drop ceiling, but the tile on the floor needs replacing, stairs are unfinished etc. Fixing that half up is on the to-do list for this year.

We live in a hi-ranch so we don't have a basement. Just a lower level and an upper level. I would kill to have either a basement or an attic. We have an attached 2-car garage, so we find place to store things, but its not the same.

You can't win no matter what you have, IMHO! I grew up in a house w/a full basement, and it was always damp and musty - I HATED it! Our house is on a slab and I hate it for completely other reasons - the floor is always FREEZING in the winter, we seem to have an ant problem year-round.

Re: basement or slab????
Right now we have a full basement, and when we move one of the absolute MUSTS of the new house has to be a basement. We plan to finish it and put a den/rec-room down there, so there's no way we can have a house on a slab.

Re: basement or slab????
We are on a slab. Neither Patrick or I had a basement growing up, so we don't miss it.
True, the floors are cold, but we are working on combatting that. We just put in wood floors over a subfloor in the LD and DR, and now the floors are warm and toasty. Next year we plan to tile our kitchen, foyer and hallway and put in radiant heating.

Re: basement or slab????
Our house is on a slab and I NEVER thought I'd miss a full basement (I grew up with a full finished basement) and miss all the possible storage space! I can't imagine what it would be like when we have kids (and we have a large 4 bed. colonial with attic space) We need storage space!!!!!

I grew up with a basement, have one now, and don't know what I would do without one.

Re: basement or slab????
we are on a slab too & we converted most of our garage into living space. My attic is very large-Rich put plywood down in the entire attic but its not so easy to get big stuff in & out. I never had a basement growing uo, but its on my list for the next house. I have way too much crap.

I have a partial basement, which is just big enough for a washer/dryer and some storage. I WANT A FULL BASEMENT!!!

Re: basement or slab????
We have a full basement and I love it. It gives us so much extra living and storage space. On the 'someday list' is the addition of a bathroom down there.
Over the holidays all the cousins were hanging out down there - we were cracking up because as kids we were always sent to the basement to play. Now here we are still all hanging out together playing in the basement.

Re: basement or slab????
We have a split level ranch with a crawl space. I've not gone in it, I'm too freaked out. There was a cat trapped in my co-workers crawl space, and now I'm totally freaked out about running into something in there.
I grew up with a basement and I really miss the storage space.

Re: basement or slab????
Slab. When I was looking I thought I couldn't imagine a house without a basement but now I am use to it. We don't have that much that needs to be stored yet. We have a two car garage - most of which has been converted to an extra room and a garage/storage closet. We plan to put down the plywood to build above the rooms in the garage - there is a lot of room up there. And eventually we will use the attic (needs to have plywood but down too). We also plan on buying a shed too store a lot of the stuff we currently store in the garage right now. For now it looks ok - it may just be a problem if we want to store heavy furniture (right now we are using the storage closet room).
