I'll comment on experience from my dad's 2nd home....a slab, designed by Levitt (of Levittown....he also did a huge part of Stony Brook)......DON'T DO IT! GET A BASEMENT!!
The hassle that goes along with a slab leak is INSANE! You can't locate the leak, you have to guess...and then have someone DRILL AS IN JACKHAMMER the slab to get to the pipe!! In 10 years, we've had 3 or 4 slab leaks.
GET A BASEMENT!!!

We have a split level house and our basement is called a partial but it's very big, not what I would consider a partial. I am so glad! We are lucky with storage, we have 2 attics also.

Another hi-rancher here...we are on a slab.
We never thought we'd survive without a basement; so far we are fine. We have a huge attic-runs the whole length and depth of the house, so we have lots of storage up there. Plus we have a garage and a big shed for additional storage.

When I was growing up we ALWAYS had a basement, but then when we moved to LI, we lost it We've gone through almost 15 years without one and dealt with it, when DH and I bought our house we bought it without a basement, HOWEVER, we have an extension on our house and have a huge family room in it's place and a laundry room on the first floor. In the future I'd really like to buy a house with a basement, I have to think about my future kiddies... where is their playroom going to be? haha!
As for storage, we have tons of closets, a crawl space in our ceiling, a huge shed and about 3 feet of garage space (our garage was converted to our family room)...

We live in a hi-ranch so we don't have a basement. Just a lower level and an upper level.
Same here.. however, we have a HUGE, wall to wall attic and an attic IN the garage.. we lucked out, we have tons of closets and storage..

I have slab too. I grew up with a basement and we would always store junk and it was musty and scary. W/o a basement now I throw out a lot and keep the house clutter free. I store my Christmas stuff in an alcove.

I have the same situation as SS's. Slab w/huge attic space and shed. The things that concern me are not so much storage space but termites, etc. We had massive damage to our home when we bought it.

We have a full basement - couldn't live without. We do a lot of work down there and DH uses it for a work area. The kids birthday parties. We have Superior Walls that is what it is called they are insulated basement walls and it doesn't get damp or anything down there!
