Re: Beagles....????

There is an organization called BREW. Its a beagle rescue organization. Do a search on yahoo and it comes up. I really wanted a beagle, but everyone talked me out of it because they supposedly smell, howl, and are hard to housebreak and train. They are also supposed to be a bad choice if you rent for those reasons. We ended up getting a mutt who is amazing, but I eventually I would like to get a beagle.

Yes, I could not remember BREW!! That was one place that I looked, but I did not get my beagle that way, people told me the same thing about beagles, coming from a beagle owner myself. I don't know why would people say beagles smell. They don't. THey do have a distincting howl-you either love the baying or you hate it. Quite frankly, I found it amousing . Especially, when someone is at the door, she would let everyone know.

People tried to make me get a jack russell terrier. I was stuck on a beagle. Yes, you are right about hound dogs being harder to house train-stubborn, but like anything, you have to have patience and constanly be on top of them. I am so glad I did not let anyone change my mind.

I have a beagle. She doesn't smell . Some beagles do howl, but mine doesn't--in fact she barely barks at all. We are her second owner (the first had a small child and another on the way and didn't want a puppy in the house). It took time, but they can be trained. We think our beagle had been to obedience school because she knew her name and 'yes' and 'no.' But she was pretty hyper. She did calm down and has been trained (she's now 5 years old).

It really depends on how young you get them and how much time you are willing to invest. When we were looking to adopt, we wanted an older beagle (because our previous one was 18 years old when she died), but we fell in love with a 9-month-old psycho beagle.

Don't let people scare you off of beagles. They are GREAT pets.
