Becoming a teacher?

Becoming a teacher?

I can't seem to get through on the NYS hotline to ask them this so I thought someone might know...

I have my Master's of Social Work and I am considering becoming a teacher. Would I have to get another Master's in Education? Any idea what would be required? Any input would be greatly appreciated!!!

Most likely you wouldn't need another degree, but you would have to take the required education classes and content area classes. I know this isn't much help, I just know that you don't always need to do a whole other Master's program.

Not sure if you would need to get your Masters in Education but you will need to take the Liberal Arts & Science Test (LAST) and the Assessment of Teaching Skills-Written (AST-W) for your provisional teaching certification. You'll also need to be finger-printed by the Board of Ed. and take 2 workshops, one on drugs and the other on child abuse.

I had a Bach in Communication when I went back to become a teacher...I got a second masters in Elem Ed and also had to take the certification tests.

NYC has a program for people who are career changers I think it the Teaching Fellows program.
They pay for your education BUT you have to guarantee them 2-3 years I believe.

my friend has an MSW and is currently a fellow. she is getting a second masters in education (special).

you have to guarantee them three years, but they pay for your masters, pay you while you are working, and guarantee you placement.

you could either do the fellows program (they pay for almost all of a new masters, you get to work sooner rather than later, but you have to guarentee 2-3 years - basically until you complete your masters) which is what i'm doing now or you can have your transcript evaluated by the DOE and they'll tell you what credits/classes you need to make up. most likely education classes and your observation and student teaching hours if you have all your content work done. my friend did that option and it took her a year and a half while working, she said it could be done in a year if you went full time (be aware one of those semesters is just student teaching). hth.

You dont need to get another masters, contact BOCES..and they will let you knwo what classes you need to take to get certified.. it depends on what subject you want to teach.

good luck! fm if you want any more advice!

sorry to hijack, but I had contacted Boces to see what classes I need, and all I need is student teaching and one class.... How do I go about student teaching if I already have my Masters and everything?

my friend went through dowling. they don't like you to do only one or two classes (they want you to do the whole degree) but will do it if you know how to work them. i believe you have to have your student teaching done in connection with a college, so you can't just do it on your own.

Thanks ladies! I contacted BOCES and am awaiting a response. I also contacted the college I work at to see if they can help. I can take classes for free but I'm worried about getting observation hours in! Ugh, it's never easy!
