What is everyones feeling about letting people you don't really know into your homes to work on them while your at work?

DH and I will not be home. We are just going to have to trust the guy. There is no way that we can be out of work for a month.

We had a big project done last year and we just put away all our valuables and we told the builder that we would be in and out all day ( somedays we got home after they left), but we figured it may leave them more cautious. We also had some friends or family members drop in every once in a while.My husband is also great for rigging the doors in our house, so we knew if they opened the bedroom doors. They thankfully never did, but we planned on speaking with them if we came home to find that they were snooping, we were just going to tell them we had a security surveillance system.

When we had to have work done during the day (our oil burner) I was lucky enough to have my MIL come over for the day. Otherwise I would have to take off from work.

We just had the basement waterproofed. My DH took a vacation day and stayed home. Not sure how we will handle it when we do the extension.

If one of us could be home, I would have my mom or one of my brothers babysit the house.

Before we moved completely in we had the wood floors redone.. I gave the guy the key to the house and he let himself in and out. I would go buy everynight and check on the work and makesure everything was locked. After they were done we planned on changing the locks on the doors so it wasnt a huge deal to us.
But it is a little different when you are living there.

We had our kitchen gutted & redone and our a lot of work done on our bathroom since we've moved in. The work went on for over 3 months so it wasn't feasible to have somebody home all the time. We made sure we got a bunch of recommendations on our contractor before we hired him and we made sure no valuables were out in the open. We gave him our key and he came and went as he pleased. I was nervous to do it, but it worked out.
If I'm having somebody new come or it's work that will only last a day, I usually work from home that day.

i think if you use a licensed and insured contractor and you have anything to worry about. there are many companys that have been in business for 20 plus years and are not fly by night companys you may pay more but you pay for the peace of mind that comes with it. with that being aid you can always take measures to safe guard you valuables for extra protection

That is probably what we will have to do!
ETA: just out of curiosity anyone that already was living in the house have a contractor that they trusted enough to be at the house when no one else was there & if so can you tell me who you used & what your experience with them was.

when we dormered, someone was NOT here everyday, it was a big job and the upstairs was pretty non existent so it wasnt like there was much they could do/take and we didnt keep anything valuable around

I am pretty much always home when the work is inside my home. There is only one carpenter guy we let in our house when we are not home. I had someone steal jewelry once when soemone was home too (when I lived with my parents). The company did nothing about it basically called us liars esp since I was only in my early 20's - they basically said since I was young I was lying!!! I was sooo PO'ed - they even stole some fake stuff that looked real!!

We found a handyman who our friends were already using and trusting (my friend works with his wife), so has has a key and comes as needed when he is in the middle of projects.
When we had our floors done it was recommended by a friend and we met them in the morning, locked up valuables and left them in the house. They would lock up when they left. We didn't have a problem.
We make the decision of what to do as needed. But we both work so we don't have much of a choice in most cases.
